Shapotou District Shapotou district is located in the central and western part of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, at the junction of Ningxia, Gansu and Mongolia. It is the youngest municipal district in Ningxia, and also the political, economic and cultural center of Zhongwei city. With a total land area of 6877 square kilometers, the region has jurisdiction over 11 townships, 165 administrative villages and 22 urban communities, with a permanent resident population of 411000. Historical evolution
Shapotou district has a long history. Human beings have been living here for more than 30000 years. It is the frontier fortress of the "Silk Road" because it connects Shaanxi and Shanxi in the East, Gansu and Xinjiang in the west, Inner Mongolia in the north and Sichuan and Yunnan in the south. It has the danger of the Yellow River in the front and Helan in the back, guarding the west gate of Ningxia. It has been an important military town in Northwest China since ancient times. Shapotou district has advocated Confucianism, culture and Taoism since ancient times. There is a site of "microlithic culture" found in the territory, where human beings lived and multiplied 4000 years ago.
In the spring and Autumn period, it was a place where Qiang and Rong people lived together.
After the Qin Dynasty merged the six states, Zhongwei was incorporated into the territory and belonged to Beidi county. Since then, 10 dynasties established counties.

Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng three years (1725) abandoned Wei to Zhongwei County, belongs to Ningxia Prefecture of Gansu Province.
In 1933, Zhongwei county was divided into two parts and Zhongning county was set up in the East.
In 1941, Xiangshan District of Zhongwei county was set up in Ningxia Province.
In 1945, Ningxia set up the administrative Commissioner's supervision area, and Zhongwei was the second one. Soon, the Xiangshan Administrative Bureau was abolished and merged into Zhongwei County, and the special district was also abolished, and Zhongwei county was directly under Ningxia Province.
In 1954, Ningxia Province was merged into Gansu Province. Zhongwei county belongs to Yinchuan District of Gansu Province.
In 1958, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established, Yinchuan special region of Gansu Province was abolished, and Zhongwei county was directly under the autonomous region.
In 1972, Yinnan district was established and Zhongwei was under its jurisdiction.
In December 2003, the State Council approved the abolition of Zhongwei county and the establishment of prefecture level Zhongwei City, and the establishment of Shapotou District in Zhongwei city. The former administrative division of Zhongwei county is the administrative division of Shapotou district. The District People's government is located in Gulou West Street.

In May 1961, Dongfanghong commune was divided into Chengguan commune and Xiyuan commune; Xiansheng commune was divided into Dongyuan commune, Rouyuan commune and Zhenluo commune; lighthouse commune was divided into Jingzhuang commune, Hongquan commune, Sanyanjing commune and chenjiashui commune. The county is divided into 12 communes.
In May 1964, Xiangshan district was set up to govern the four communes established by the original Xiangshan commune. In October, Chengguan commune was changed into Chengguan town.

On February 18, 2008, Xingren town and Haochuan township of Haiyuan county were under the jurisdiction of Shapotou District of Zhongwei city. Shapotou district (Zhongwei city) is located in the central and western part of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
