In February 1990, the former suburbs of Wuhu City, siwushan district and Yuxikou district were abolished and Jiujiang district was established.
In 1996, Jiujiang District governed 2 streets, 2 towns and 1 township: sinaishan street, Yuxikou street, Wanli Town, Daqiao town and Guandou township. The district government is located in Jiuhuashan road.
In 1997, Jiujiang District abolished Guandou Township and established Guandou Town, where the people's Government stationed.
In 2003, Jiujiang district was located in the northeast of Wuhu City. It borders Wuhu County in the East, Wuwei County in the west, Jinghu District and Xinwu District in the south, Dangtu County and he County in Ma'anshan City in the northeast and northwest. It has jurisdiction over two streets of sifushan and Yuxikou, three towns of Daqiao, Wanli and Guandou, 20 communities and 31 villages. The district government is located at the intersection of North Jiuhua Road and East Tianmen road.
In 2004, the official reply on the approval of dividing Qingshui town of Wuhu County into urban area (MDZ No. 49): the Qingshui town of Wuhu County was divided into Jiujiang District of Wuhu City. Qingshui town was abolished and divided into Qingshui, Jingshan, Dazha and Zhangzhen streets. By the end of 2004, Jiujiang district had jurisdiction over six streets and three towns.
On September 13, 2005, the State Council approved (Guo Han 77) to adjust some administrative divisions of Wuhu: Jingshan street in Jiujiang district and Guangfu and Liantang communities in Wanli town were put under the jurisdiction of Jinghu District. The original Jiujiang district covers an area of 153 square kilometers with a population of 164300. After the adjustment, due to the inclusion of Qingshui town (excluding the original Jingshan Town area) in Wuhu County, the area of Jiujiang district has increased to 232 square kilometers, the population has increased to 234200, and the number of streets has changed from 5 to 8.
In October 2007, 11 villages in Qingshui street were assigned to Wuhu Economic and Technological Development Zone, and Wanchun Street office was established.
On August 22, 2011, the State Council approved to put Shenxiang town in He county under the jurisdiction of Jiujiang District of Wuhu City. So far, Jiujiang district has jurisdiction over seven streets and one town.
