Mouding County is located in the middle of Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in the north central part of Yunnan Province. The maximum vertical distance between the north and the south of the county is 57.6 km, and the maximum horizontal distance between the East and the west is 53.6 km. The lowest altitude is 1140 meters, the highest is 2897 meters, the average altitude of Gonghe town is 1758 meters, and the total area of Mouding County is 1464 square kilometers. Mouding County is one of the closest counties to Chuxiong City, the capital of Chuxiong Prefecture. It is only 35 kilometers away. There is a cross-border yuanshuang secondary expressway. It is located in the radiation zone of the industrial new area in Central Yunnan. The newly planned Chuxiong airport is located in mouding.
On September 25, 2018, it won the honorary title of "2018 e-commerce into rural comprehensive demonstration county" of the Ministry of Commerce. On September 29, 2018, after the study of Yunnan provincial Party committee and government, Mouding County was approved to withdraw from the poverty-stricken county. On February 2, 2019, it was rated as the county-level advanced unit of Chinese medicine by the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine.

Historical evolution
Mouding County belongs to Yizhou County in Han Dynasty, and Jianning County in Shu Dynasty. Jin belongs to ningzhou, which was occupied by the Cuan family in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
The fourth year of Wude in Tang Dynasty (621 AD) was the capital of Nanning in Xipu Prefecture. In 637 ad, it was changed into fashionable state. In 648 ad, it was also under the jurisdiction of Pangzhou. After 879 ad, it was under the jurisdiction of nongdong Jiedu.
In Song Dynasty, it was called mouzhou and belonged to Weichu Prefecture. In Song Dynasty, it was called huangpengqing when Dali kingdom was promoted to Thailand.
In the fourth year of Mongolian Xianzong (1254), there were 1000 households in muzhou and 100 households in huangpengqing (formerly Xindian Township and jiangpo township). In the 12th year of Yuan Dynasty (1275), it was renamed Dingyuan Prefecture, belonging to Weichu road. Soon, it was demoted to Dingyuan County, and Nanning (now under the jurisdiction of jiangpo town) was transferred to Dingyuan county.
In the 21st year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1388), Yuanyu garrison was set up, belonging to Chuxiong garrison; in the 24th year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1391), Dingyuan county was set up, belonging to Chuxiong mansion.
In the Qing Dynasty, Yuan county was still established, belonging to Chuxiong Prefecture.
In 1914, the ancient place name "mouzhou" and "Dingyuan" was changed to "Mouding County", belonging to Chuxiong Prefecture. After the founding of the people's Republic of China in October 1949, Mouding County was established as Chuxiong special area. From October 15, 1958 to November 4, 1959, it was incorporated into Chuxiong county and became mouding district. Muding county was reestablished on November 5, 1959, and now it belongs to Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture.
