Dongshan County, a county under the jurisdiction of Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, is located in the southern coast of Fujian Province, between Xiamen and Shantou special economic zones. It is adjacent to the Taiwan Strait in the East, across the sea from Taiwan Island, South China Sea, Chaoshan area of Guangdong Province in the south, Zhao'an County in the west, and Zhangpu County in the northeast, with a total area of 248.34 square kilometers. By 2019, Dongshan County has jurisdiction over seven towns with a total population of 221800.
Dongshan County has a profound history. It is the birthplace of the writer Huang Daozhou, the training place for Qi Jiguang to fight against the Japanese invasion, the place for Zheng Chenggong and Shi Lang to recover Taiwan, and the birthplace of Gu Wenchang's spirit. It has a number of prehistoric relics and characteristic resources such as "Guandi culture", "Dongshan land bridge" and "Nandao language family", and is known as "China's excellent tourism county".

Historical evolution
In 214, the 33rd year of Yingzheng, the king of Qin Dynasty, Baiyue was pacified and Nanhai county was built.
In the sixth year of Yuanding (111) of the Western Han Dynasty, Jieyang county was set up in Nanhai County, and Jieyang county was set up in Dongshan County.
In the ninth year of Yixi (413) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Yian county was built and Suian county was built.
In 592, sui'an county was merged into Longxi County of Quanzhou (now Fuzhou), and Dongshan was attached to it.
In 686, Huaien County of Zhangzhou was established, and Dongshan was changed to be one of its branches. In the 29th year of Tang Kaiyuan (741), Huaien county was withdrawn and merged into Zhangpu County. Dongshan belonged to Zhangpu.
In 1387, Tongshan garrison was set up in Dongshan. In 1530, the ninth year of Jiajing reign of Ming Dynasty, when an County was established, five capitals of Dongshan were designated.
In the 13th year of Yongzheng (1735) of the Qing Dynasty, the territory under the jurisdiction of Tongshan Shouyu Qianhu also belonged to Zhaoan County, and Dongshan ended the history of two genera.
On May 1, 1916, Dongshan County was established with Dongshan Island and its surrounding islands (the above islands were separated from Zhaoan County) and Gulei Peninsula (separated from Zhangpu County). The county government was set up in the first district (formerly Tongshan Suocheng and now Tongling town).
On May 12, 1950, Dongshan County was liberated and the people's Government of Dongshan County was established.

In May 1950, the county was divided into three districts. In July of the same year, Gulei was separated from the first district to build the fourth district.
In September 1952, it was ordered to enter Dongshan County from Dazai island of an County.
In November 1955, the Gulei peninsula was designated as Zhangpu County.
In March 1956, the county government moved to Xipu.
In March 1956, the county people's committee moved to Xipu. The whole county is divided into one town and two districts.
In March 1957, the district was withdrawn and the township was merged. The whole county is divided into one town (streets are set below the town) and nine big townships (small townships are set below the big townships).
In September 1958, Dongshan people's commune was established. Subsequently, the system of big townships (towns) and small townships was abolished, and the whole county was divided into five people's communes: Chengguan, Xipu, Kangmei, Xingchen and Chencheng; the people's commune of the county was renamed the people's commune union of the county.
In December 1958, five people's communes were reorganized into nine production regiments.
In March 1959, the people's commune Union and production regiment system of Dongshan County were abolished, and five people's communes of Chengguan, Xipu, Kangmei, Xingchen and Chencheng were restored.
In April 1961, some production brigades of Xipu and Kangmei communes added two communes, Zhangtang and qianlou. So far, there are seven people's communes in the county.
In July 1975, Chengguan commune was abolished and Chengguan town and Tongshan commune were established.
In April 1980, Tongshan commune was incorporated into Chengguan town. The county has a total of one town and six communes.
In October 1984, the people's commune was abolished and the township (town) and village system was implemented. The county is divided into two towns, namely Xipu and Chengguan, and five townships, namely Kangmei, Zhangtang, Xingchen, qianlou and Chencheng.
In October 1985, Chengguan town was changed into Tongling town.
In January 1988, there were 44 small islands around Dongshan Island (connected with Dadao).
In December 1989, two townships of Xingchen and Chencheng were changed into towns.
In September 1994, with the approval of Fujian Provincial Department of civil affairs, Tongling town was abolished and its jurisdiction was merged into Xipu town. At the same time, Tongbo village is designated from Kangmei Town, Huwei village and Nanpu village are designated from Zhangtang Town, and they are merged into Xipu town.
In July 2009, Dongshan County of Zhangzhou city was approved by Fujian Provincial People's government to set aside Tongling Town, which was originally incorporated into Xipu Town, and restore the system of Tongling town.

There are 413 hills with the highest elevation of 274.3 meters. There is no big stream, only a few small streams less than 5 km long. The coastline twists and turns, 141 kilometers long. There are many harbors, and the beach area is vast.

Dongshan County has a subtropical marine monsoon climate with an average temperature of 20.8 ℃ for many years and frost free all year round. The average annual precipitation is 1103.8 mm.

The upper Triassic Jurassic metamorphic rocks in Dongshan County are widely distributed in the north, West and south of the county, that is, to the West and south of jianzhai Xipu qinyingshan Yanya line and to the north of Tongling Town, accounting for about two-thirds of the county area. Quaternary eluvium is a red clay formed by weathering of metamorphic rocks, volcanic rocks and intrusive rocks. From the surface to the deep, it gradually transits to weathered rock and fresh bedrock. The thickness of red clay is generally 1-5m. It is mainly distributed in Bachimen, Xingchen, qianlou, Xipu, Wulong, Dongshen, Kangmei, Chenglong, Tongbo, Qinying, Donggu and Chencheng. The Quaternary Holocene Series slope deposit is distributed in the local Piedmont, mixed with gravel and clay, with a thickness of 1-5m.

Dongshan County has more than 200 million tons of silica sand resources, and the silicon content is more than 97%. Approved by the National Mineral Reserves Committee in 1986 and 1987, the total reserves of quartz sand are 271051800 tons (270 million tons), including 69.56 million tons of glass sand, 240 million tons of which contain 95-97% silicon, and the grade of silica is 97.54-96.18%, alumina is 1.26-1.44%, and iron oxide is 0.13-0.15%.
Biological resources
Due to the destruction of the original vegetation, the sparse secondary artificial vegetation and the long-term hunting in Dongshan County, the wild animals on land are rare. However, there are abundant aquatic animal resources, including more than 850 species (except zooplankton), of which 549 species have been identified, including 205 species belonging to 156 genera, 96 families, 19 orders of marine fish, 24 species belonging to 11 families of freshwater fish, 198 species of molluscs, 66 species of arthropods and 56 other species. There are few original vegetation in the county. Except for a small amount of rain forest in Huangshan and houyao villages, the vegetation is artificial secondary forest.

Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 3.803 billion yuan, an increase of 3.0%; the added value of the secondary industry was 13.230 billion yuan, an increase of 8.9%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 8.735 billion yuan, an increase of 6.6%. The per capita GDP was 114372 yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.6%. The added value of the primary industry accounted for 14.8% of the GDP, the added value of the secondary industry accounted for 51.3%, and the added value of the tertiary industry accounted for 33.9%.
