During the Three Kingdoms period, Wuning County belonged to Kuaiji County of Yangzhou.
In the first year of Wu Baoding's reign (266), the branch established Dongyang County in the west of Jijun county and took charge of Changshan County (now Jinhua). In the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, in the fourth year of Wude (621), Kuaiji county was changed to Yuezhou and Dongyang county to Wuzhou.

The rivers in Dongyang City belong to Qiantang River system. Some of the water flows from the five townships of Yuxi, Sandan, Luofeng, Zhaikou, Xiying and two townships of Hucun and zuocan into Qiantang River through Cao'e River.
