In 1913, Shujiang Prefecture was abolished and renamed Heyang County. Later, because of the same name as Heyang County in Henan Province, it was renamed Chengjiang County.
In December 2019, with the approval of the State Council and the approval of the Ministry of civil affairs, Chengjiang County will be abolished and Chengjiang city at county level will be established.
