Located in the eastern margin of the Loess Plateau, the overall terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, belonging to medium and small undulating hilly and mountainous areas. The area is divided into northwest and southeast by Kouquan fault. The northwest is a relatively undulating mountainous area, accounting for about 64% of the total area, and the southeast is a slightly undulating plain area, belonging to Datong Basin, accounting for about 36% of the total area. The river in the territory belongs to the Haihe River Basin. The main rivers are Shili River and Kouquan river with a drainage area of less than 1000 square kilometers and more than 100 square kilometers, with a total length of 57.4 kilometers. Shilihe is the largest river in the territory, flowing from west to East through Yanzishan, Sitaigou, jiangjiawan, Jinhuagong, Qingciyao and other streets, with a length of 28.6 km and a drainage area of 452 square kilometers.

Among them, 38.643 billion tons of coal reserves have been developed, including Datong Coal Mine Group production mine, with an area of 1827 square kilometers, recoverable capacity of 3.451 billion tons and annual output of 39.5 million tons; the district production mine is located in Yungang district and Zuoyun County of Datong City, with an area of 13.87 square kilometers, geological reserves of 64.72 million tons and annual output of 1.95 million tons. The reserves of cement limestone are 215176000 tons, mainly distributed in Qifengshan and langergou areas, with a recoverable capacity of 921000 tons. Flux limestone reserves 70.192 million tons, distributed in the western area of Kouquan. The reserves of kaolinite are 230 million tons, which are distributed in the coal measure strata of Permo Carboniferous and coexist with coal.
