Jiajiang County is named for the wonderful landscape of Qingyi River, where "the green mountains on both sides of the river flow out from the middle". In the Xia Dynasty, Liangzhou was the territory of Sichuan, and in the Han Dynasty, Bashu was the territory of Sichuan. In June 1985, it belongs to Leshan City. Jiajiang County is the "porcelain capital of Western China", "hometown of bamboo and paper for thousands of years", "national key tea producing county" and "nuclear power base of China". On March 19, 2020, Jiajiang County was selected as one of the first batch of "demonstration counties for green prevention and control of crop diseases and pests" in China. On March 31, 2020, Jiajiang County was selected into the list of advanced counties (cities and districts) in Sichuan Province's rural reform in 2019.

Nan'an county was established in Han Dynasty, belonging to Qianwei county. Now Jiajiang County is under the old rule of Nan'an, and it also has most parts of Leshan.
In Jin Dynasty, it was still Nan'an county and Qianwei county.
In the Southern Dynasties, Nan'an county was established and governed by Qi. In Liang Dynasty, Qianwei county was changed to Qingzhou, which belongs to Nan'an county.
In 496, qitongzuo county was built in the south of Dongpo District of Meishan, which belongs to Yizhou. Its jurisdiction includes today's Dongpo District, Qingshen, Danling, Hongya, Central District of Leshan City, Jiajiang, Emeishan, etc.
In the Western Wei Dynasty, Qingzhou was changed to Meizhou, which belonged to Nan'an county.
In the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Qingzhou was restored, Jiazhou was changed and four counties were led.
Since the fourth year of kaihuang of Sui Dynasty (584), it has been Emei County, Qingyi county and Longyou County. In the 13th year of kaihuang (593), the Qiang and Longyou areas were cut and leveled, and the garrison was abandoned in Jiajiang County, belonging to Jiazhou. The county is located on the Qingyi River above the ancient Jingkou of today's Qianfoyan. It is named "Jiajiang County" because there are two mountains facing each other and one water flowing in the middle of the ancient Jingkou. Sui Daye three years (607) cut Shuzhou.
In 619, the second year of Wude in Tang Dynasty, Jiazhou was restored. Kaiyuan seven years (719 years) cut Yizhou, eight years (720 years), back to Jiazhou.
In the first year of the Qing Yuan Dynasty (1195), Jiazhou was promoted to Jiading Prefecture.
In 1275, Jiading Prefecture was upgraded to Jiading Road, which belonged to the county. In 1283, Hongya County entered Jiajiang.
In the fourth year of Hongwu (1371) of Ming Dynasty, Jiading road was changed to Fu, and in the ninth year of Hongwu (1376) it was changed to Jiading Prefecture.
In 1735, Jiading Prefecture was promoted to Jiading Prefecture, which belonged to the county.
In 1914, Jiajiang County belonged to Jianchang road; in 1930, Jiajiang County belonged to the national government of Sichuan Province; in 1935, Jiajiang County belonged to the fourth administrative supervision area.
On December 16, 1949, troops of the Chinese people's Liberation Army settled in Jiajiang County, and Jiajiang County was liberated.

Jiajiang County is located at the Northeast foot of Mount Emei, which is the transition zone from the southwest edge of Sichuan basin to the middle mountain area of Mount Emei. The mountains above 1000 meters in the west of the county belong to the remaining veins of Mount Emei. The central Qingyi River Basin is floodplain and valley. The Qingyi River is the narrowest in Qianfoyan, with Mucheng dam in the upstream and Yungan dam in the downstream. The eastern part is hilly and platform. From northwest to Southeast, the whole terrain forms a distinct geomorphic outline of mountains, flat dams and terraces. The highest point of the county is doulikou, Xiema Township, with an altitude of 1451 meters (1997 county boundary survey map), and the lowest point is the exit of Qingyi River, Ganjiang Town, with an altitude of 380 meters.
In Jiajiang County, mountains, hills and dams each account for about one third. The area of low and middle mountains in the west is 349400 mu, accounting for 31.12% of the total area of the county; the area of Tableland and hills in the middle and East is 37.33 mu, accounting for 33.25% of the total area of the county; the area of Mucheng dam, Yungan dam and jinniuhe dam is 329500 mu, accounting for 29.35% of the total area of the county; and the area of natural waters is 70400 mu, accounting for 6.28% of the total area of the county.

Rivers in Jiajiang County include Qingyi River, Zhichuan River, Macun River, Jinniu River, etc. Qingyi River enters Hongya County of Meishan City and flows through Mucheng Town, Yingjiang Township, Nan'an Township, Fengcheng Town, Jiepai Town, Shunhe Township and Ganjiang town. The county is 33 km long with an annual runoff of 16.84 billion cubic meters. Zhichuan River enters from Hongya County of Meishan City and flows into Qingyi River through Xiema Township and Mucheng town. The county is 28 km long with an annual runoff of 93.62 million cubic meters. The Macun river originates from niuxian mountain of Macun Township, flows through Macun Township, Huangtu Town, Ganlin town and Ganjiang Town, and enters Qingyi River, with a length of 30 km. The East tributary of Jinniu river originates from Dongpo District, Meishan City, and the West tributary originates from Danling County, Meishan City. The two tributaries flow through Wuchang town and Sandong town. After converging in Wufeng Township, they flow through Qingzhou Township and into Qingshen County, Meishan City. The main mineral resources in Jiajiang County are coal, shale and kaolin. There are about 10 million tons of bituminous coal and 5 million tons of anthracite in huatou mountain area. Coal mining has been carried out for more than 100 years and the output is about 200000 tons. Shale reserves are about 300 million cubic meters, with the largest reserves in Macun Township and Zhongxing town. Dozens of ceramic factories use shale as raw material to produce wall and floor tiles, and more than 20 machine brick factories use shale as raw material to produce machine bricks. Kaolin reserves in Jiepai Town are about 50 million tons.
Hydropower resources
Maotan hydropower station in Jiajiang County is located in Shunhe township of Jiajiang County, the main stream of Qingyi River. It is one of the first class hydropower stations in the three-level planning scheme recommended by the hydropower planning of Huikou section of Qingyi River in the lower reaches of Qianfoyan. It is the second cascade of cascade development in Jiajiang County. The upstream of the project area is Qianfoyan Hydropower Station under construction, and the downstream tailrace outlet is niutouyan water intake. The main tasks of the project development are power generation, flood control and irrigation, taking into account the urban landscape water. After the long march canal is built in the long term, it will be subject to the long march canal irrigation water, and the remaining water will be used for power generation. The power station is a hybrid development, with a normal water level of 406m, a total reservoir capacity of 30 million cubic meters and an average annual power generation of 488.53 million kwh.
