Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County, subordinate to Huaihua City, Hunan Province, is located in the west of Hunan Province. It is located in the southern foot of Wuling mountain system and the extension zone of eastern Yunnan Guizhou Plateau. It is adjacent to Zhongfang county and Hecheng District in the East, Hongjiang City, Huitong County and Tianzhu County in Guizhou Province in the south, Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County and Wanshan District in Guizhou Province in the west, Mayang Miao Autonomous County and Tongren City in Guizhou Province in the north. Zhijiang town is only 39 kilometers away from Huaihua City. It is known as the gateway of Yunnan and Guizhou and the throat of Guizhou and Chu.
Zhijiang county was established in the fifth year of emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty (202 BC). Zhijiang Town, the seat of the county, is the seat of the state government for six times. In August 1945, the victory negotiation of China's Anti Japanese war was held in Zhijiang, which made Zhijiang a famous historical city.

The county was abandoned in the Eastern Han Dynasty and merged into Chenyang county.
Shuyang County was set up in Taikang period of Jin Dynasty (280-289) and subordinate to Wuling county. In Yixi period of Jin Dynasty (405-418), the county government moved to Tan city.
In the Liang Dynasty (502-557), it was changed to longlong County, which belonged to Nanyang County. Chen Yongding three years (559) to Yuanling County.

In the 24th year of the Republic of China, it belonged to Zhiqian Mahuang administrative supervision area. In the 25th year of the Republic of China, it was the fourth administrative supervision district of Hunan Province, the seventh administrative supervision district of Hunan Province in the next year, and the tenth administrative supervision district of Hunan Province in the 29th year of the Republic of China.
On October 2, 1949, the 112th division of the 28th army of the Chinese people's Liberation Army liberated Zhijiang. On October 26, the people's Government of Zhijiang county was established, which was subordinate to Huitong District, Zhijiang District, Qianyang district and Qianyang district. On May 1, 1955, the county people's government was renamed the county people's Committee. On September 8, 1968, the county Revolutionary Committee was established to exercise the functions and powers of the county people's government. On December 4, 1980, the county people's government was reestablished. In 1981, because Qianyang area was renamed Huaihua area, Zhijiang was attached to it. On September 22, 1986, with the approval of the State Council, Zhijiang county was abolished and Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County was established, with its subordinate and jurisdiction unchanged. In 1998, Huaihua was set up as a city, and Zhijiang Dong Autonomous County was subordinate to Huaihua City.
