Heyuan was the place of Baiyue in ancient times. In the chapter of "Yu Gong" in Shangshu, it was divided into Yangzhou area. The Qin, Han, Three Kingdoms, Jin and other dynasties belonged to gulongchuan County, which was under the jurisdiction of Nanhai county.
In 483, the first year of Qi Yongming in the Southern Dynasty, Longchuan was located in Heyuan county and Xinfeng County, still belonging to Nanhai county. In the reign of Liang Tianjian in the Southern Dynasty (about 502), Nanhai county was set up as Lianghua county (Lianghua in Huiyang), and Heyuan county was under the jurisdiction of Lianghua county.
In the first year of kaihuang (581), after Pingchen, Lianghua county was set up as Xunzhou (now Huizhou). In the 11th year of kaihuang reign, Longchuan province was incorporated into Heyuan County, which is a part of Xunzhou. In the 18th year, Xinfeng was changed into Xiuji county. Sui Daye early years (605 years) and the province Xiuji, merged into Heyuan County, changed the state to Longchuan County, Heyuan is under the jurisdiction of Longchuan County.
In 622, Longchuan County was renamed as Xunzhou County, and Shicheng County was established in Heyuan county. In 627, the first year of Zhenguan of Tang Dynasty, Shicheng County was again attacked. In the reign of emperor Zhongzong of Tang Dynasty (about 684), leixiang county was changed from Xunzhou to leixiang County, and in the fourth year of Tianbao (745), leixiang county was changed to Haifeng County. In the first year of Qianyuan (758), it was also called Xunzhou. In the Southern Han Dynasty (958), Liu Fei moved to leixiang, and changed the old rule of Xunzhou to Zhenzhou. Heyuan, BOLUO, Haifeng and Guishan counties were all under the jurisdiction of Zhenzhou.
In the fourth year of Tianxi (1020), Zhenzhou was changed to Huizhou because of avoiding the name of Zhao Zhen. In 1120, Huizhou was changed to BOLUO county. Shaoxing was renamed Huizhou in 1133. In 1279, Huizhou was upgraded to Lu, and Heyuan was under the jurisdiction of Huizhou Lu.

In the Qing Dynasty, Heyuan was under the jurisdiction of Huizhou government, which was the central area of Huizhou government.
In the eighth year of the Republic of China (1919), Heyuan belonged to Guangdong chaoxun, and then it was abandoned. After the abolition of the Taoist system, the intermediate local administrative organs were not set up for a long time. In 1925, Guangdong was unified, and Heyuan was subordinate to the office of Dongjiang administrative committee. In 1928, Heyuan was under the jurisdiction of Dongjiang Rehabilitation Committee. In 1932, it was under the jurisdiction of Dongjiang appeasement Commission. In 1936, Heyuan was subordinate to the office of the fourth district administrative inspector of Guangdong Province. In the 29th year of the Republic of China (1940), under the direction of the Executive Yuan, the office of the fourth district administrative commissioner was moved from Huizhou to Heyuan. In 1949, it was renamed the office of the Sixth District administrative inspector.
In the early days of the founding of the people's Republic of China, Heyuan belonged to Dongjiang district. In 1953, it belonged to the eastern Guangdong administrative region, and later to the Huiyang special region. In 1959, Huiyang District was abolished and under the jurisdiction of Shaoguan District. In 1963, Huiyang area was restored, and Heyuan was under the jurisdiction of Huiyang area until the end of 1987.
In January 1988, with the approval of the State Council, Heyuan county was abolished and Heyuan City (prefecture level city) was established. In the north of the area, Dongpu plain is formed by the alluvial of Dongjiang River and Xinfengjiang River; in the middle, hills are formed; in the south, the small plain is formed by the alluvial of Dongjiang River; in the west, hills are formed. The overall terrain is low in the East and high in the West. The highest altitude is in Guishan at the west end, with the highest altitude of 1056 meters. The lowest altitude is in Shuangtou village of Dongjiang, with the altitude of 46 meters. The maximum relative altitude difference in the territory is 1010 meters.
The geomorphic form is related to structure, stratum and rock, and is the result of internal and external dynamic crust action. According to the genesis, it can be divided into three genetic types: tectonic erosion, denudation erosion and erosion accumulation. The geomorphic form is mainly manifested as low center, low mountain landform, Main Hill landform, low mountain landing landform, valley plain landform, etc.
The strata in the area mainly include Jurassic, Cretaceous, Cenozoic and Quaternary in the middle and new territories, mainly distributed in the southwest, Middle East and northeast of the area. The lithology is mainly sedimentary clastic rocks, Dashan clastic rocks and loose rocks. The total bare area is about 278.2 square kilometers, accounting for 76.26% of the total planning area.
The geological structure is located in the composite section of Fogang Xinfengjiang latitudinal structural belt and Huaxia Yellow River large fault structural belt, which is dominated by NE trending structure. The North-South structure is the structural system of the southeast mountain, accompanied by strong magma flow, especially the extensive intrusion of Mesozoic Yanshanian intermediate acid magma. The structures in this area include Guishanwei syncline, Heyuan fault and herringbone fault.
According to the hydrogeological and geological structure conditions, there are three basic types of groundwater: pore water of loose rock, fracture pore water of clastic rock and fracture water of bedrock.
The engineering geological characteristics are closely related to geology, tectonic geomorphology and ground water activities. The rock and soil can be divided into granitoid rock group, clastic rock group, gypsum salt calcareous rock group, alluvial proluvial soil group and residual slope soil group.
The main geological disasters in Yuancheng District are soil erosion, reservoir sedimentation, earthquake, collapse and landslide, debris flow, etc.
There are a large number of dinosaur egg fossils, dinosaur skeleton fossils and dinosaur footprint fossils in the dinosaur fossil geological relics in Yuancheng District, which is a rare burial site integrating dinosaur egg, dinosaur skeleton and dinosaur footprint fossils in the world.
