In ancient times, Jimei District belonged to Tongan County of Quanzhou Prefecture and Haicheng County of Zhangzhou Prefecture. In May 1957, Tongan county was set up as a suburb. In August, Haicang Township and Xinlong township of Haicheng county were set up as suburbs. In August 1987, Heshan Township, a suburb, was set up as Jimei District. In 2017, the total population of Jimei was 742549 (the census data of Xiamen before the meeting were clear), of which 275638 were registered residence and 466911 were inflow.

Evolution of organizational system
Jimei District historically belonged to the west of Tongan county and Haicheng county (the county seat is now Haicheng Town, Longhai District, Zhangzhou City).
The largest river in Tong'an is Dongxi River, which goes out to sea from Shixun natural village, and then a section of channel to the south is called Xunjiang river. Jimei is the end of the West Bank of Xunjiang River and the end of the mainland. Therefore, it was originally called "xunzei" and "Jinwei". During the Tianqi period of the Ming Dynasty, Chen Wenrui, a local villager, returned to his hometown and changed his name to "Jimei". In Xiamen dialect, "Xunwei", "Jinwei" and "Jimei" have the same pronunciation, but they are not popular.
After the second year of the Republic of China, Chen Jiageng, a famous overseas Chinese and hometown loving old man, came back to China and became famous in Fujian. As a result, "Jimei" gradually became famous at home and abroad, so the names of "Xunwei" and "Jinwei" were gradually replaced by "Jimei".

Ming Dynasty belonged to Quanzhou Prefecture, Fujian Province. "Xiamen City" was built in 1394, the 27th year of Hongwu. In 1650, Zheng Chenggong stationed in Xiamen. In 1655, he set up Siming Prefecture in jiaheli, Suide Township, Tongan county. In 1680, it was abolished. Since the Qing Dynasty, Tong'an county was subordinate to Fujian Xingquan Yongdao. Before Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty, the Dao department was stationed in Xinghua prefecture (today's Putian City). In the middle of Yongzheng period, it moved to Jinjiang County, Quanzhou Prefecture. In October 1958, Tong'an county was transferred from Jinjiang District to Xiamen.

In August 1958, Haicang and Xinlong, which originally belonged to Haicheng county (now Longhai City), were assigned to the suburbs of Xiamen, with an area of 513.75 square kilometers.
In April 1964, Xinglin town was set up and put under the jurisdiction of the suburbs together with Xinglin commune. At this time, the suburbs had jurisdiction over Jimei and Xinglin towns and frontline (Heshan), Guankou, Xinglin, Dongfu, Haicang and Houxi communes.
On September 1, 1978, Xinglin town and Xinglin commune were set up from the suburbs. The suburb governs one town and five communes.
In October 1984, the people's communes in the suburbs were transformed into townships and towns, the brigade into administrative villages, and villagers' committees were set up.
On March 30, 1986, lvcuo and Lianban villages in Heshan Township were transformed into Kaiyuan District.
