In Xia and Shang Dynasties, it belonged to Sanmiao. In Western Zhou Dynasty, it was the territory of e Hou. In spring and Autumn period and Warring States period, it belonged to Chu and E county.
Before the Eastern Han Dynasty, it was e-yi, E-Jun and e-xian.
In 221 A.D., Sun Quan, king of Wu, established his capital here and claimed the title of emperor. Taking the meaning of "prosperity by force", he changed E county to Wuchang.
From the Jin Dynasty to the southern and Northern Dynasties, it belonged to Wuchang county.
In the Sui Dynasty, it belonged to Jiangxia County, and in the Tang Dynasty, it belonged to Ezhou.

In October 1987, Ezhou City abolished the four administrative systems of Huarong, Changgang, Chengchao and Liangzihu, and merged the former Chengchao district with Echeng district. Shawo Township, Yangye Township, Huahu Township, Tingzu Town, BiShidu Town, Yanji town of the former Chengchao district and Dushan township of the former Changgang district were under the jurisdiction of Echeng district. In November 1987, Xishan sub district office was added.
In March 1997, the leadership system was changed, and the two towns of Zelin and Shishan and the four sub district offices of Fankou, Xishan, Gulou and Fenghuang were directly managed by Ezhou city. At the end of 2001, Ezhou City adjusted the township administrative divisions appropriately, and Zelin town returned to the jurisdiction of Ezhou city. In June 2004, Changgang management area was removed from the district and built into a town, which was under the jurisdiction of Echeng district.
