Yuan'an County, belonging to Yichang City, Hubei Province, is located in the west of Hubei Province and the northeast of Yichang city. Historical evolution
During the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, it belonged to the state of Chu.
In the Western Han Dynasty, Linju county was established in the first year of Jianyuan (140 BC), which was named Linju county because of its Linju water.
During the Three Kingdoms period, it belonged to Xincheng County.
At the end of Long'an in Eastern Jin Dynasty (401), Linju was changed into Gao'an County, which was subordinate to Xiangyang County.
In the Southern Dynasty and the early Song Dynasty (420), it was ruled by Wenyang County, which was the reason of Qi and Liang.
In the first year of Wucheng (559), Gao'an was changed to Yuan'an, which belonged to xiazhou.

In the early Qing Dynasty. Yongzheng 13 years (1735 years) belong to Jingzhou Prefecture. In 1791, Qianlong promoted Jingmen to Zhili Prefecture and changed Yuan'an to Zhili Prefecture.
During the period of the Republic of China, Yuan'an belonged to Xiangyang Road at first, followed by Jingyi road. In 1932, it was the ninth administrative supervision district of Hubei Province. In 1935, it was transferred to the sixth administrative supervision district.
During the second Civil Revolutionary War, Yuan'an was a part of Jingmen Dangyang Yuan'an base in Western Hunan and Hubei Soviet area.
In the early August of 1948, the patriotic and democratic Nanyuan county government was established, which was under the jurisdiction of Dangyang special office of Jianghan military district.
In May 1949, it was divided with Nanzhang and transferred to Yichang administrative office.
In March 1992, Yichang area merged with Yichang city to establish Yichang city. Yuan'an county belongs to Yichang city.
