Congtai district has a long history. During the Shang Dynasty, it was the capital of the Shang Dynasty.

In 491 BC, Zhao Yang (Zhao Jianzi) captured Handan. Since then, the jurisdiction of Congtai district is Zhao Yang's hereditary leader.
