Historical evolution
In the spring and Autumn period, it was Baizi state, later Chu state, and in the Warring States period, it belonged to Korea, which was called Hebo. In the Han Dynasty, it belonged to Xiping County of Runan County and Wuyin County of Nanyang County. In the Northern Wei Dynasty, it was xiwuyang, and in the Sui Dynasty, it was Beiwu county. Wuyang county was established in the fourth year of Kaiyuan period in Tang Dynasty, which has remained unchanged in the past dynasties.
In 1970, the state built Wuyang extra heavy steel plate plant at the north foot of Ma'anshan and the North Bank of Shimantan reservoir, which was under the centralized construction of the project directly under the Ministry of metallurgical industry. Henan Province set up the Pingwu project headquarters to take charge of its overall leadership.
In March 1972, the Municipal Construction Department of Henan Pingwu industrial zone was established. In December 1973, the Wuyang work area office of Henan Revolutionary Committee was established, and six communes in the south of Wuyang county were designated as its jurisdiction, which was directly under the central government of Henan Revolutionary Committee and was an independent administrative region.
In May 1977, the Wuyang work area office of Henan Provincial Commission of reform was abolished and transferred to Pingdingshan City. In November of the same year, it was named after Wuyang Iron and steel company, the largest enterprise in the area, as the former Pingwu work area and Wuyang Steel area.
In October 1979, it was transferred to Xuchang area. In October 1982, it returned to Pingdingshan City. In September 1990, with the approval of the State Council, Wugang district was abolished and Wugang City was established.
