Meihekou, a county-level city directly under the jurisdiction of Jilin Province, is a node city in the central and Eastern core areas of Jilin Province and a regional center city in the southeast. It is located in the southeast of Jilin Province, the north of Tonghua City, the West foot of Changbai Mountain and the upper reaches of Huifa River. It is located in the transitional zone between Songliao plain and Changbai Mountain area. Shuangsheng village of Xinhe Town in the lower reaches of Yitong River is adjacent to Huinan County in the East; watershed, Xinkailing, Pandaoling, jiguanlazi mountain and Liuhe County in the South and Southeast; baiyinhe River in the southwest, upper source of Yangshu River and Huashu village of Shancheng town in the West are adjacent to Qingyuan County in Liaoning Province; Xibei and Dongfeng County in the West; Liangzi River and Panshi City in the north and northeast are adjacent. The total area is 2174.6 square kilometers.
Meihekou city is an important transportation hub in the southeast of Jilin Province and one of the important transportation hubs in the northeast. It is an important business logistics center in the southeast of Jilin Province and a coal production gathering place.

Before treatment
The Meihekou area has been inhabited by ancestors as early as four or five thousand years ago. More than 10 late primitive settlements, 7 stone shed tombs and more than 40 ancient sites have been found in the territory, and a large number of relics have been collected. In Shang Dynasty, Western Zhou Dynasty and spring and Autumn period, it was Sushen department, in Warring States period, it was Wufa department, and in Qin Dynasty, it was Liaodong county.
In the autumn of the second year of Yuanfeng (109 BC), Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty pacified Wei's Korea and set up Zhenfan, lintun, Lelang and xuantu counties in the northeast. From then on to the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Three Kingdoms and the Western Jin Dynasty, Meihekou was under the jurisdiction of xuantu Prefecture.
In the first year of Zongzhang (668), Koguryo perished. In Tang Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Anton's Prefecture, and Meihekou belonged to Anton's Prefecture. In the first year of Shengli (698), it was under the jurisdiction of Changling Prefecture of Bohai State.
In 1115, the fifth year of Zhenghe in the Northern Song Dynasty, the first year of Jinshou state, Meihekou was a remote leader of Xianping Road (now Kaiyuan).
In 1233, Meihekou was located in the south of Xianping Prefecture. Meihekou is mainly inhabited by nvzhenren, who belongs to qianhusuo, wupan, Kaiyuan Road, Liaoyang province.
In the first year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1368), Zhu Yuanzhang destroyed Yuan Dynasty and divided Nuzhen into Jianzhou, Haixi and Yeren. Meihekou belongs to nuergandus, the Donghe Weidi of nuzhenzhu in the west of the sea. At the end of Ming Dynasty, the Nuzhen of Haixi formed four tribal groups, namely hada, Yehe, Huifa and Wula. Meihekou belongs to Huifa and hada. In the 35th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1607), Nurhachi destroyed Huifa department, and Meihekou belonged to Nurhachi Department of Nuzhen in Jianzhou.
Qing Kangxi 16 years (1677), awarded on Chongqing, set up fresh paddock. Meihekou is a forbidden area. The ban began in 1878.

Guangxu five years (1879) set up a paddock governor yamen (Governance of Hailong city), set up a manager, jurisdiction about two people. On July 4, 1880 (August 19, 1880), Hailong Fumin hall was set up, which was subordinate to fengtianfu, and there was one Fumin judge. Tongduan Yamen and Weichang general yamen are the same as Hailong city (now Hailong town). Hailong hall has 36 communities and 120 villages.
On July 1, 1902 (August 4, 1902), Hailong hall was upgraded to Hailong mansion, and Dongping (now Dongfeng County), Xifeng County, Xi'an county (now Liaoyuan City, Dongliao county) and gualiuhe county were added as the jurisdiction of Hailong mansion. Subordinate to general Shengjing (now Shenyang). In the second year of Xuantong (October 1910), the purpose was to abolish the Viceroy Yamen.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), after the founding of the Republic of China, the government continued to govern. On January 8, 1913, Hailong Prefecture was changed into Hailong County, which was under the jurisdiction of Hailong Town, and was subordinate to the Eastern Road of Fengtian province. The five counties of Dongping, Xifeng, Xi'an, Liuhe and Huinan, which belong to the original Hailong mansion, are designated. The whole county is divided into four police districts: hailongcheng Dongguan, Chaoyang Town, liubashi and shanchengzi. Meihekou belongs to liubashi.
In 1923, 130 villages were divided into 8 districts.
On September 16, 1924, eight districts of the county were changed into four districts with 20 guarantees. In 1927, the county was divided into 10 districts and 120 villages. Meihekou is divided into five districts. In the summer of 1930, the district was abolished and 44 villages were designated.
In 1931, after the September 18th Incident, the Japanese invaders occupied Northeast China. Hailong was occupied by the Japanese. The Japanese puppet Hailong County Office was set up, which was subordinate to Fengtian province.
On January 17, 1934, the whole territory was divided into 10 guarantees and 88 a. In the same year, it was changed to 8 districts, still 43 villages. Since March 1, 1936, the street village system was implemented, with three streets including Chaoyang town and 37 villages including Meihekou.
In January 1937, Meihekou village was transformed into Meihekou street, becoming one of the important market towns in the territory. In July 1941, Meihekou was transferred to Siping province. In 1943, Chaoyang town and dongfengwu village were assigned to Huinan County. In Hailong County, the rest of the village streets were merged into three streets, namely Meihekou, Shancheng town and Hailong, and 23 villages.
On November 1, 1945, the democratic government of Hailong county was formally established, which was under the jurisdiction of Hailong Town, and was subordinate to northern Liaoning Province. On May 18, 1946, the Northeast administrative committee decided that Hailong county was directly under Liaoning Province. On May 24, the Kuomintang diehards occupied Hailong and established the Kuomintang Hailong county government, which was subordinate to the Kuomintang Liaobei provincial government. The democratic government of Hailong county carried out strategic shift and carried out guerrilla struggle.
On May 31, 1947, Li Hongguang detachment of the Northeast Democratic Alliance Army (3rd vertical 8th Division) recovered Hailong town. On June 1, the whole territory of Hailong county was liberated, and the democratic government of Hailong County returned to Hailong Town, belonging to the fourth Office of Liaoning Provincial Administrative commissioner. 10 districts were rebuilt in Hailong county. The central area of Meihe river is renamed Meihekou area.
In February 1948, the CPC Liaoning Provincial Committee decided to abolish the four prefectural committees and return Hailong county to the province. In July, the Northeast administrative committee decided to put Hailong County under the jurisdiction of the third prefectural committee of Northern Liaoning Province (in Xi'an, now Liaoyuan City). During the year, Hailong county was divided into 10 districts and 235 villages (including 9 streets and 226 villages).
On April 21, 1949, the Northeast Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and the Northeast administrative committee decided to abolish Liaobei Province, and Hailong county was directly under Liaodong province. On May 18, the CPC Liaodong Provincial Committee and provincial government decided that Hailong county should be under the management of Tonghua regional Commissioner's office. On August 15, 1954, Liaodong province was abolished and Hailong county was put under the jurisdiction of Jilin Province, which was still under the jurisdiction of Tonghua regional Commissioner's office.
On May 8, 1955, the county people's government was renamed the people's Committee of Hailong county. On September 15, the administrative areas of the garrison camps (i.e. the West construction site and the East construction site) in Heping Township and Dayang township of Dongfeng County were put under the jurisdiction of Hailong county.
In July 1968, the Revolutionary Committee of Hailong county was established to perform the functions of the people's Committee of Hailong county.
From September 25 to 27, 1980, the first session of the Ninth People's Congress of Hailong county was held, and it was decided to change the county reform committee into the county people's government.
On February 4, 1985, the State Council approved the abolition of Hailong county and the establishment of Meihekou city (prefecture level). The former administrative region of Hailong county is divided into Hailong district and Meihe district. Liuhe County and Huinan County of Tonghua area were put under the jurisdiction of Meihekou city.
On January 30, 1986, with the approval of the State Council, Meihekou city was changed into a county-level city, still under the jurisdiction of the original administrative region of Hailong County, which was entrusted by Tonghua city. Meanwhile, Hailong district and Meihe district were abolished, and Huinan County and Liuhe County were under the jurisdiction of Tonghua city. Meihekou city is under the administration of Tonghua city.
In November 2013, Meihekou officially became a pilot city of counties directly under the jurisdiction of Jilin Province, and was granted the economic and social management authority of prefecture level cities.
In December 2016, Meihekou was listed as the third batch of national new urbanization comprehensive pilot areas.
