In the seventh year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1374), the town was set up, and the West Wei was under the jurisdiction of the capital of Shanxi. In the 16th year of Jiajing, Wuzhai castle was built.
In the third year of Yongzheng (1725). The five Dazhai fortresses in the west of the town: qiansuo, yousuo, Zhongsuo, Zuozuo (now Chengguan) and Shangsuo (now Hewan) were transformed into Wuzhai county and merged into sanchabu, belonging to Ningwu Prefecture.
During the period of the Republic of China, Wuzhai belonged to Yanmen road.
After the outbreak of the Anti Japanese war in 1937, Shanxi was under the jurisdiction of the second administrative region, Wuzhai.
