Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County, under the Kashgar region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is located in the southwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The northwest, southwest and South are respectively connected with Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the southeast and East are connected with Yecheng county and Shache County, and the north is connected with aktao county.

Tashkurgan, which means "stone city" in Uighur, is named after the ancient stone castle in the north of the city.

Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County has a total area of 25000 square kilometers and a total population of 40000 (2012). There are Tajik, Kirgiz, Uygur, Han, Hui and other nationalities. The county has jurisdiction over 2 towns and 11 townships (including 1 ethnic township). At 8611 meters above sea level, it is the second highest peak in the world.

On September 25, 2018, it won the honorary title of "2018 e-commerce into rural comprehensive demonstration county" of the Ministry of Commerce. On January 25, 2019, it was selected as the national "safe agricultural machinery" Demonstration County in 2018. On January 24, 2020, the people's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region agreed to withdraw Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County from the sequence of poverty-stricken counties.

Evolution of organizational system

TA county is located in the southwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, in the southeast of the Pamir Plateau. The geographical coordinates are between 35 ° 37 ′ - 38 ° 40 ′ N and 71 ° 20 ′ - 77 ° 01 ′ E. On the outside, it borders on Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, with a border line of 888.5 km; on the inside, it borders Yecheng, Shache and aktao County of Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture. The county is 484 kilometers long from east to west and 329 kilometers wide from north to south, with a total area of 25000 square kilometers. TA county is located in the tashikorgan uplift of the West Kunlun fold belt, where is the junction of the Karakoram mountains, the Hindu Kush mountains and the Alai mountains, with continuous snow peaks and ravines. The terrain inclines from southwest to northeast, and the Mountains extend from southwest to northeast. The terrain mainly includes mountains, valleys, basins and hills.

Winter is long and cold, drought and less rain, sufficient light energy and lack of heat; spring and autumn is short and windy, with a little rainfall; there is no obvious summer. The main rivers in Ta county are Tashkurgan River, taheman River, Waqia River and kuleqing river. River recharge is mainly based on alpine glaciers and snow melting, supplemented by deep groundwater recharge.

As of 2012, the total runoff of rivers in Ta county is about 3.7 billion cubic meters. The cumulative amount of underground spring water is 12 cubic meters per second, the runoff is about 320 million cubic meters, the groundwater depth is 22 meters, and the water yield is 450 liters per second.

There are 8.3 billion cubic meters of available surface water resources and 150 million kilowatts of water energy, ranking the first in Xinjiang; the geothermal resources were identified by experts in 2012, second only to Tibet Yangbajing, ranking the second in China.

Wild animals include snow leopard, brown bear, argali sheep, North goat, yellow sheep, wild yak, Plateau snow water fish and other rare species unique to the plateau.
