Yuanqu County (Yu á NQ à Xi à n), also known as Shun Township, is the hometown of Emperor Shun. It is located in the south of Shanxi Province, crossing Wangwu in the East and Zhongtiao in the west, bordering the Yellow River in the South and Taihang in the north, and belongs to Yuncheng City of Shanxi Province. Yuanqu County was called genfang in the Shang and Zhou dynasties, Yuanxian in the Western Han Dynasty and Yuanqu in the Song Dynasty.
Yuanqu County is rich in human resources, the discovery of "century dawn ape" fossil overturns the conclusion that "human originated in Africa"; Lishan, the only primeval forest in North China, is known as "North China animal and plant species gene bank". The average annual temperature is 13.5 ℃, the average annual precipitation is 631 mm, and the frost free period is 230 days.
Yuanqu County is a "national green energy demonstration county", "national two base work advanced area" and an old revolutionary base area. By 2013, it has a total land area of 1620 square kilometers, 11 townships, 188 administrative villages and 1277 natural villages, with a total population of 235000.
On January 22, 2020, it was named National Garden County by the Ministry of housing and urban rural development.

The origin of the name
The county is named because it is surrounded by mountains and the central wall is like a bend. According to Yuanqu County annals, Yuan refers to Wangwu mountain, the shape of mountain is like yuan (according to, Yuan refers to the topography of the Loess Plateau, meaning steep mountain flat), Qu refers to Hequ, and the county is one of the nine bends of the Yellow River, so it is called Yuanqu.
Historical evolution
The Shang and Zhou dynasties were "genfang", belonging to the Marquis state.
In the spring and Autumn period, it belonged to the state of Jin.
The Warring States period belongs to Wei Dynasty, which is called Wangyuan. Zhiyuan County of the Qin Dynasty was under the jurisdiction of Hedong County, and the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Three Kingdoms and the Western Jin Dynasty were all under Hedong county.
In 470, it was changed to Baishui County, belonging to Shaoshang county. During the reign of Xiaochang (525-527), Shaoshang county was removed and Shao County was built in Yanghu. Baishui County was divided into Baishui County and Qinglian county.
In 537, Shao County was changed to Shaozhou County, and Baishui County to Bocheng county. In the Northern Zhou Dynasty, Puyuan county was set up.
At the beginning of the great cause of Sui Dynasty, Shaozhou was abolished, and Bocheng, Qinglian and Puyuan were merged into Yuan County, belonging to Jiang county. In the first year of Yining (617), Shaoyuan county was set up in modern and ancient towns. Yuan county was divided into Yuan County, Qinglian county and Bocheng county.
Tang Wude first year (618), belongs to Shaozhou. Wude five years (622 years), province Bocheng into Yuan county. In the first year of Zhenguan (627), Qinglian was withdrawn to Yuanxian. In the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty, it was renamed Yuanqu County and still belonged to Jiangzhou. Jinxingding four years (1220), belongs to Yizhou. Yuan Fu belongs to Jiangzhou. In 1266, Yuanqu was removed and incorporated into Jiangxian county. It was restored in 1279.

Yuanqu County is located in the south of North China plate, the south end of the contact zone between Ordos block and Hehuai block, and the east side of the northeast end of Zhongtiao fault arch. The southeast is monoclinic structure, the main structural strike is ne, inclining to the southwest, the older igneous rocks are exposed in the northwest, and the sedimentary rocks of new strata are exposed in the southeast, so the geological structure changes are complex. There are ancient Sinian, Cambrian and Ordovician strata in Paleozoic, Permian and Triassic coal measures strata in Mesozoic, and tertiary and Quaternary loess strata in Cenozoic. The mountainous area is 1170.80 square kilometers, accounting for 72.24% of the total area; the original loess plateau area and hilly area are 404.7 square kilometers, accounting for 25% of the total area; the alluvial plain area is 39 square kilometers, accounting for 2.4% of the total area.

Transportation
Yuanqu County has convenient transportation.
