Dongchuan District, belonging to Kunming City, Yunnan Province, is located in the northeast of Yunnan Province and the northernmost end of Kunming City, 150 km away from Kunming. It is adjacent to Huize County, Qujing City, Yunnan Province in the East, Xundian County, Kunming City in the south, Luquan County, Kunming City in the west, Qiaojia county, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province in the north, Huili County and Huidong County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province across the Jinsha River It is 1858.79 square kilometers. Dongchuan district is located in the northern edge of Yunnan Guizhou Plateau, with the highest altitude of 4344.1 meters, the lowest altitude of 695 meters and the height difference of 3649.1 meters. Dongchuan district is rich in mineral resources. It is one of the six major copper production bases in China. Jiaozi snow mountain is known as "the first mountain in Central Yunnan". Xiaojiang River Basin is a typical rainstorm debris flow area in the world, known as "Natural Museum of debris flow". Both sides of Xiaojiang River are the largest tropical crop area in Kunming.
In March 2009, Dongchuan District was identified as the second batch of 32 resource exhausted cities by the State Council. In April 2019, the people's Government of Yunnan Province decided to withdraw Dongchuan District from the sequence of poverty-stricken counties. On February 2, 2019, it was rated as the county-level advanced unit of Chinese medicine by the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine.

In the sixth year of Jianyuan (135 BC), Tanglang county was established under the jurisdiction of Qianwei county.
During the period of the Three Kingdoms, Yizhou, Yongchang, Zhuti and other counties in the former "Southwest Yi" area were collectively referred to as "nanzhong". Under the jurisdiction of the Shuhan regime, after the suppression of the rebellion, the newly established "seven counties of nanzhong" in Yueyi, Jianning, Yunnan, Yongchang, Xinggu, Yaoyi, and Zhuti, which were led by the commander-in-chief. Dongchuan was still called Tanglang County, belonging to Zhuti county.
After the destruction of Shu in the Western Jin Dynasty, Jianning, Yunnan, Yongchang and Xinggu were named "ningzhou". After the annihilation of Wu and the unification of the whole country, the whole country was divided into 19 states. Ningzhou was one of the 19 states, commanding seven counties in nanzhong. Dongchuan was under the jurisdiction of Zhuti County in ningzhou, and the county name remained unchanged.
In the early Sui Dynasty, Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty set up Gongzhou, kunzhou and Xiezhou in Yunnan and Western Guizhou. Dongchuan was under the jurisdiction of Gongzhou, and the county name, Tanglang County, remained unchanged.
In 621, Dongchuan was still under the jurisdiction of Gongzhou, and its name was changed to tangxingju. In 859, Nanzhao unified Yunnan and established "Nanzhao state". Dongchuan was under the jurisdiction of Nanzhao state. Meng Shilong set up Dongchuan County here, which governs today's Qiaojia, Huize, Dongchuan, Luquan, Huidong County and Ningnan County in Sichuan Province.
During the period of Dali state in Song Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Dali state, and Dongchuan was one of the six festivals. In the later period, the system of saving and governor was abolished, and the system of "Prefecture" and "county" was established. Dongchuan is one of the four prefectures, which governs the whole territory of Dongchuan, Huize and Zhaotong, and Weining, Guizhou.
In 1274, Yunnan Province was established, under which there were four levels of Dao, Lu, Fu (Zhou) and county. In 1291, because Huili Prefecture, Malong Prefecture, Jiangzhou and Tong'an Prefecture, which belong to Huili, Huidong and Xichang of Sichuan Province, were under the jurisdiction of Dongchuan, Dongchuan was upgraded from Fu level to Lu level, and was subordinate to Yunnan Province.
In the 15th year of Hongwu (1382) of the Ming Dynasty, Dongchuan government was set up. The government was under the jurisdiction of Huize County, Yunnan Province; in the next year, it was changed to Dongchuan military and civilian government, which was under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province.
In 1699, the Qing government changed the land to Liu, and still set up Dongchuan Prefecture, which is equivalent to today's Dongchuan District and Huize and Qiaojia counties. Yongzheng four years (1726) Dongchuan junminfu, Yunnan. In 1764, Dongchuan Junmin government was changed into Dongchuan government, which was under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province.
In 1913, Dongchuan Prefecture was abolished and Dongchuan county was established. Incorporated into Zhaotong. Tangdan, Yinmin, Luoxue, Wulong, and fazhe in Dongchuan belong to xianghuali, Qiaojia county. Jiyi, Bigu and tuobuka belong to Yijiang District of Dongchuan county. In 1929, Dongchuan county was renamed Huize County.
In 1949, Dongchuan was liberated in May. In June, Huize and Qiaojia border region liberation committees (stationed in Xincun) were established. Later, Huiqiao border region administrative committee was established. Dongchuan District was basically under its jurisdiction.
After the peaceful liberation of Yunnan, in order to better develop and construct Dongchuan Copper Mine, 14 townships including Tangdan, Yinmin, Jiyi and Bigu in the fifth and seventh districts of Huize County were set up in April 1954, and Dongchuan Mining Area Government (stationed in Tangdan) was established.
In October 1958, the prefecture level Dongchuan City was established. Huize County in Zhaotong area was merged into Dongchuan City, and the municipal government was located in Tangdan.
In 1961, the municipal government moved to Xincun, and the CPC Dongchuan Municipal Committee and copper mine leadership were still in Tangdan.
In December 1964, Huize County was designated as Qujing District, and Dongchuan City was still a provincial city.
In February 1999, the prefecture level Dongchuan City was abolished and the county-level Dongchuan District was officially established, which was under the jurisdiction of Kunming city.
In April 2004, with the approval of the provincial Party committee and the provincial government, the reemployment special zone was established in Dongchuan, and its jurisdiction remained unchanged.

In 2005, Dongchuan District abolished Xincun Town, Bigu Town, Lvmao Township and Guhai Township, and established Tongdu town. In January 2011, shekuai Township, hongtudi town and other towns designated by Luquan and XUNDIAN counties were set up to establish Kunming ruodian Industrial Park and Kunming Jiaozishan Tourism Development Zone (functional zone). The rest are under the jurisdiction of the other six towns.
In April 2011, Tongdu town was abolished and Tongdu street was established, and the original administrative region remained unchanged. Since then, Dongchuan has jurisdiction over one office, six towns and one township.
On January 7, 2012, with the approval of the municipal Party committee, Dongchuan Wulong new district was established to implement the management system of "two brands and one team" with Wulong town.

Dongchuan, located in the northern margin of Yunnan Guizhou Plateau, is a transitional part of the Sichuan Yunnan meridional structural belt and Northeast China structural belt. The maximum vertical distance from north to south is 84.6 km, and the maximum horizontal distance from east to west is 51.2 km. It has high mountains, deep valleys and steep terrain. It is bounded by Xiaojiang River, with the highest peak of 4017.3 meters above sea level in the East and Gongwang Mountain System of 4344.1 meters above sea level in the west, which is "the first peak in Central Yunnan". The intersection of Jinsha River and Xiaojiang River in Dongchuan is only 695 meters above sea level, which is the lowest point in Kunming.
