Sansui County, located in the east of Guizhou Province, is subordinate to Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. Sansui, with superior natural endowment, is the "hometown of Chinese folk bamboo weaving art" named by the Ministry of culture of the people's Republic of China. In 1972, wazhai bamboo hat was presented as a national gift to visiting US President Nixon. In 2007, Sansui bamboo weaving was listed as intangible cultural heritage of Guizhou Province. In 2008, the Ministry of culture of the people's Republic of China named Sansui as "the hometown of Chinese folk culture and art (bamboo weaving)". Known as the "hometown of Ma Ya" and "hometown of bamboo hat", it is the birthplace of Sansui duck, a famous local duck in China.
On September 25, 2018, it won the honorary title of "2018 e-commerce into rural comprehensive demonstration county" of the Ministry of Commerce.
On February 2, 2019, it was rated as the county-level advanced unit of Chinese medicine by the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine. On April 24, 2019, Guizhou Provincial People's government officially approved the withdrawal of Sansui county from the poverty-stricken county sequence.

In 1107, the first year of the Song Dynasty, qiongshui county was established, belonging to Sizhou.
Xuanhe four years (1123), abandoned as fort.
In 1132, qiongshui county was restored.
In 1279, it was changed into anding county. It is located in Xiaoai Ludong, Chixi and other places, Beidai cave, Datian and Datian, and in Deming cave, tuluo and other places where barbarian officials are located.
In the fifth year of Hongwu (1372) of Ming Dynasty, there were five cases against qiongshui, Demin, Xiaoyi, Bidai and tuanluo; in the 25th year (1392), there were five cases against qiongshui cave barbarians, belonging to Sinan Xuanwei; in the 12th year of Yongle (1414), there were five cases against qiongshui cave barbarians, belonging to Zhenyuan Prefecture.
In 1733, qiongshui county was changed to Zhenyuan County. Yongzheng 12 years (1734) added Zhenyuan County Cheng, a member of the water division in Qiong.
In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), qiongshui county was established as the prime place of qiongshui County, belonging to eastern Guizhou Province; in the 13th year (1924), it was changed to Lingshan County; in the 16th year (1927), it was renamed Sansui county. It is said that in the rice field near the county seat, a rice plant has three ears, so it is named.
In 1950, it belonged to Zhenyuan district.
In 1956, it was included in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture.
On December 20, 1958, the 82nd plenary session of the State Council decided to abolish cengong and Sansui counties and put all the administrative areas of the former two counties under Zhenyuan County.
On October 20, 1962, the 117th plenary session of the State Council decided to restore Sansui county and take the former administrative region of Sansui County merged into Zhenyuan County as the administrative region of Sansui county.

In 2013, Sansui County governs 5 towns and 4 townships: Bagong Town, Tailei Town, wazhai Town, Tonglin Town, Xuedong Town, Gunma Town, Changji Town, Kuanchang town and Liangshang town. 159 villages and 5 residential communities.
On April 22, 2016, the people's Government of Guizhou Province (QFH [2016] No. 122) agreed to set up Changji town and Liangshang town in Sansui county.
On August 8, 2019, Guizhou Provincial People's Government approved the establishment of Wenbi street and Wubi street in Sansui county.

Geology and geomorphology
The division of tectonic units in Sansui county is roughly bounded by Shidongkou fault. The fault belongs to South China paraplatform in the southeast and Yangtze paraplatform in the northwest. The main structural lines are NE-SW folds and faults. The strata are mainly Qingshuijiang formation of lower Sinian group, followed by upper and lower Sinian and Jiumenchong formation of Cambrian.
