Haitangwan district was originally Haitangwan Town, which was named after Haitangwan, a national coastal town. There are 16 rivers in Haitang District, of which Tengqiao River and Tengqiao West River are the two largest tributaries. The coastline of 21.8 km long and the original ecological river system of 13.8 km long run through the area in the north-south direction.
Tengqiao river originates from angriling in the southwest of Baoting county. Its main stream flows through Xinzheng and Jiamao in Baoting county and Haitang District in Sanya City. It enters Sanya City at the farm power station at the junction of Haitang district and Baoting County in Sanya City, and finally flows into the South China Sea at Haitang Bay. The total length of the main stream of Tengqiao river is 61.65 kilometers, with a controlled drainage area of 436 square kilometers. The length of Sanya City is 18.18 kilometers, with a drainage area of 141 square kilometers.
As the main tributary of Tengqiao River, the West River of Tengqiao originates from heteng ridge in the southwest of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County. The main stream flows through Xinzheng of Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County and Haitang District of Sanya City. It enters Sanya City at Chitian reservoir at the junction of Haitang District of Sanya City and Baoting County, and joins into the main stream of Tengqiao river at Haitang District of Sanya City about 1.8km upstream from the sea mouth.
