Yunxi District, belonging to Yueyang City, Hunan Province, is located in the northeast of Hunan Province, on the South Bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, bordering Linxiang City in the northeast, Jianli County of Hubei Province across the river in the northwest, and Yueyang County and Yueyanglou District in the south. It was built in April 1984. In June 1996, it changed its name from North District to Yunxi District. Covering an area of 388.2 square kilometers, it governs 4 towns, 2 townships, 1 farm, 8 neighborhood committees, 64 villages and sub farms. There are three large-scale central enterprises in the territory, including Changling Refining and chemical plant, Yueyang Petrochemical Plant and Huaneng Yueyang Power Plant. National Highway 107 and Beijing Guangzhou railway pass through the area, and the 23.4 km Yangtze River waterway accompanies the area. The main tourist attractions are Lucheng ancient town and pingtian "Le Shan Hao Shi" memorial archway.
In 2015, after the township division adjustment, Yunxi District governed 3 towns and 1 street. On February 2, 2019, it was rated as the county-level advanced unit of Chinese medicine by the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine. On January 29, 2021, it was selected into the list of areas with remarkable achievements in real work in 2020 announced by Hunan Provincial People's government.
Evolution of organizational system
Yunxi calendar belongs to the original Linxiang county (now Linxiang City) jurisdiction. According to local records, the Tang Yu period belongs to Jingzhou region.
In Xia and Shang Dynasties, it was the land of Sanmiao. During the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, it was under the jurisdiction of Changsha County. In the Western Han Dynasty, it belonged to Xiajun County of Changsha, and in the Eastern Han Dynasty, it belonged to Changsha County. During the Three Kingdoms period, the territory first belonged to Shu, and then to Bachu of Changsha County of Wu state.
From the first year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 280), through the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui Dynasty to the end of Tang Dynasty, the territory has always belonged to baling county.
After the Five Dynasties, during the reign of the Tang Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty, Ma set up a dynasty farm in Lucheng town in the northeast of Baling county. In the fifth year of Song Chunhua (1994), the dynasty farm was promoted to a dynasty county. It was renamed Linxiang County in the second year of the reign of Dao in Song Dynasty (996), and it has been under the jurisdiction of Linxiang county from Song Dynasty to 1930. Yunxi post station was established in Ming Dynasty.
On April 6, 1984, with the approval of the State Council, the North District of Yueyang City was established and subordinate to Yueyang City.
In June 1996, it was renamed Yunxi District of Yueyang City.
On March 16, 1996, with the approval of the State Council (guohan No. 16), the North District of Yueyang City was renamed Yunxi District; in June, it was officially renamed Yunxi District. According to the fifth census in 2000, there are 163220 permanent residents in Yunxi District, including 20410 in Yunxi Town (5 towns and 1 township), 9953 in Lucheng Town, 20951 in Lukou Town, 8795 in Daorenji Town, 16344 in Wenqiao Town, 31597 in Yunxi Township, 25376 in Changling refinery and 29794 in Yueyang Petrochemical plant.

It has jurisdiction over 5 towns, 1 Township, 1 farm, 8 neighborhood committees, 56 villages (sub farms), 19 resident groups and 680 villager groups.
In 2001, songyanghu farm was withdrawn and Yongji township was built under the jurisdiction of Yunxi District (Note: it was officially implemented on August 16, 2002). It has jurisdiction over 5 towns, 2 townships, 10 neighborhood committees, 65 administrative villages, 19 resident groups and 680 villager groups.

By the end of 2002, Yunxi District had an area of 395 square kilometers and a total population of 163200 (including 32000 in Changlian and Yuehua factories). Yunxi District is located in the northeast of Yueyang City and the South Bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Yunxi District belongs to the transition zone from Mufu mountain to Jianghan Plain, with undulating peaks, low hills, crisscross river ports and numerous lakes. The whole terrain inclines to the Yangtze River in a ladder shape from southeast to northwest. The highest altitude point in the territory is Xiaomuling in shangqingxi village of Yunxi Township, with an altitude of 497.6 meters; the lowest altitude point is Chenzi Lake in Yongji Township, with an altitude of 21.4 meters. Generally, the altitude is between 40 and 60 meters. 65% of the surface materials are metamorphic rocks, and the rest are sandy rocks. The soil is mainly composed of Quaternary red clay and quaternary Holocene River and lake sediments. Quaternary red clay is mainly distributed in the southeast of the territory, which is suitable for the development of forest, fruit, tea and other crops. Quaternary Holocene River and lake sediments are mainly distributed along the Yangtze River in Northwest China.
