The word "Malong" is a transliteration of "Malang" in Yi language, which means "garrison city".
Malong district was called tonglaiyi in ancient times, and tonglaixian county was established in the second year of Yuanfeng (109 BC) of the Western Han Dynasty, belonging to Yizhou county.
During the Shu Han and Jin Dynasties, it was called Tonglai county and was subordinate to Jianning county. Tang Wude first year (618) renamed tongqi County, is Langzhou (nanningzhou). Two Cuan when the West Cuan curved yoke.
Nanzhao was called quhechuan, belonging to Tuodong Jiedu. In the late period of Dali state in Song Dynasty, it was called Nagu department, one of the 37 departments. It belongs to Shicheng County.
At the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, it was renamed Nagu Qianhu. Lingyilong Baihu belongs to momiwanhu. In 1276, Nagu Qianhu was changed into Malong Prefecture and Yilong Baihu into Tongquan County, belonging to Qujing Road (once attached to Rende Prefecture in a short time).
In the 15th year of Hongwu (1382), Tongquan county was withdrawn into Malong Prefecture, which was subordinate to Qujing Prefecture. From the sixth year of Xuande (1432) to the twelfth year of Chenghua (1476), it belongs to Rende Prefecture. In the seventh year of Hongzhi (1494), Liuguan Zhizhou was established.
In the Qing Dynasty, it was called Malong Prefecture and attached to Qujing Prefecture.
In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), the Prefecture was abolished and the county was established, which was renamed Malong county administrative office, directly under the provincial government.

The whole terrain is mountainous, not deep in valley, steep in riverbed gradient, and turbulent in water flow. The largest dam is less than 0.8 square kilometers.

Malong River: it is a tributary of Niulan River in Jinsha River system. It originates from Shuiqing and Shuanglong Village in the upper reaches of songxipo reservoir, flows through xihaizi, xiaolichong, yuezhoutun, Xiaohaizi, Shangying and Xiaying in Yuewang Township, and then enters Longquan reservoir in Tongquan Town, and flows to Malong District, with a flow of 26 km. From the city of Malong District, through tuguanzhai, Geli and huangba in Wangjiazhuang Town, and Mulong, Sanjia, Chemabi, baimanghe, maguohe and riverside villages in maguohe Town, it enters fenglongwan reservoir in Xundian County, with a flow of 33 km. It is the largest river in Malong district and also the one with the most irrigation. The runoff area is 648 square kilometers, accounting for 40% of the total area of the region.
Hongqiao River: it is a tributary of Malong River in Jinsha River system. It originates from laowangpo, Zhaohe, xiaofangzi and Tieshan in the upstream of Longhai reservoir in Jiuxian street. It flows through Hongqiao and chijiawan and enters Malong River in maguohe town. The main channel is 26.5 km long with a runoff area of 192 square kilometers. Accounting for 11.9% of the total area of the region.
Zika River: it is a tributary of the Nanpan River of the Pearl River system. It originates from Dazhou and Shihe in Dazhuang Township, huayuanshan and aodu in Jiuxian street. It flows through Puda, milang, Zika and mide streets in maming Township and enters Mingyue River in Yiliang. The main channel is 39 km long with a runoff area of 173.3 km2.
Longdong River: it is a tributary of Nanpan River of Pearl River system. It originates from Jianshan, Lizigou and maomaodong in Yuewang Township, flows through Longdong, fanglang, Nazhang, Zhuyuan and Yidu in Nazhang town and Dahebian, Hongshiyan, wangjiaying, Dazhuang and xiaodoubabibi in Dazhuang Township into Yiliang County. The runoff area is 262.2 square kilometers.
AHEI River: it is a tributary of the water system of Nanpanjiang River. It originates from xiaojiwo in Jiuxian street, maming, shuijian River, shilihai, Yongsheng and kulibaqing in maming township. It flows through Chahe River, BAISHIYAN and zhangmeishan, and flows through tiaoshibao gorge to enter the horseshoe river. The main river course in the area is 19.4 km long and the runoff area is 145.4 km2.
Xihe River: a tributary of Nanpanjiang River, originates from modaoqing in zhangantun Township, flows through Yankou, tujiezi, Xiaohe, zhangantun and yanguantun, and enters Xihe Reservoir in Zhanyi district. The flow is 12.6 km and the runoff area is 85.4 km2.
Moli River: it belongs to the tributary of Malong River in Jinsha River system. It originates from shangguanba and tuqiaochong in maguohe Town, flows through lukoushao and datanggu in Xundian County, meets Malong River in damerlang and huadongwan in Malong District, and flows into fenglongwan reservoir in Xundian County. The flow is 19.47 km and the runoff area is 52 km2.
Xiangshui River: it is a tributary of Nanpan River of Pearl River system. It originates from Xiangshui street of Tongquan Town, flows through Xiangshui village and enters Miandian reservoir of Qilin District, with a runoff area of 22.2 square kilometers.
