Dawu County, subordinate to Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, is located in the northeast of Hubei Province, the border between Hubei and Henan, and the southwest section of Dabie Mountains. It is 48.8 kilometers long from north to South and 42.2 kilometers wide from east to west, with a total area of 1985.71 square kilometers.
Dawu County, formerly known as Lishan County, was founded in 1933 and renamed Dawu County in 1952. It is the hinterland of the old revolutionary base area and the revolutionary base area of Hubei, Henan and Anhui. Zhou Enlai, Dong Biwu, Li Xiannian, Xu Qianqian and other party and state leaders have left fighting footprints in Dawu, which is also the hometown of President Li Yuanhong of the Republic of China.
In 2018, Dawu County governs 14 towns and 3 townships. In 2017, Dawu county had a total population of 632012 thousand, realizing a GDP of 14.07977 billion yuan, of which the added value of the primary industry was 3.6817 billion yuan, the added value of the secondary industry was 4.0219 billion yuan, and the added value of the tertiary industry was 6.37678 billion yuan. In April 2020, the people's Government of Hubei Province approved Dawu county to withdraw from poverty-stricken counties.

From the end of the Qing Dynasty to the 21st year of the Republic of China (1932), Luoshan in Henan Province was under the jurisdiction of Xiaogan, Huangpi and Huang'an (now Hong'an) in Hubei Province. From 1930 to 1932, the Communist Party of China established three county Soviets in Luoshan, beixiaobei and Hekou.
In 1932, the army of the national government carried out the fourth "encirclement and suppression" in the revolutionary base areas of Hubei, Henan and Anhui. The main force of the Fourth Front Army of the Chinese workers' and peasants' red army withdrew and entered Sichuan and Shaanxi in the West. The general headquarters of "suppressing bandits" in Hubei, Henan and Anhui provinces of the national government established Lishan County on January 1, 1933, according to the "outline of establishing counties in newly recovered areas" and the "situation is important, far away from the city, inconvenient to control" and "government order is not enough". Then, from April to may, the Ministry of the interior, the Executive Yuan, and the national government went through the approval procedures and issued the official County seal. It was originally the fourth administrative supervision district of Hubei Province. In 1936, it was changed into the second administrative supervision district. In 1939, the second administrative supervision district was abolished and became the second administrative supervision district. In 1945, it was changed into the second administrative supervision district.
From the beginning of the 31st year of the Republic of China (1942) to September of the 34th year of the Republic of China (1945), the Party committee of the Hubei Henan border region, the administrative office of the Hubei Henan border region and the administrative department of the fifth division of the New Fourth Army entered dawushan area and established three anti Japanese democratic governments in Anli County, luoliying county and Linan county.
In January 1946, the Central Plains Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, the headquarters of the Central Plains military region, and the administrative office of the Central Plains liberated region entered xuanhuadian. On June 26, the Central Plains broke through the encirclement, and Lishan Autonomous County democratic government, Lishan County democratic government, and Lishan County patriotic democratic government were successively established.
On April 6, 1949, Lishan county was liberated.
On October 1, 1949, the people's Republic of China was founded. Lishan County patriotic democratic government was renamed Lishan County People's government, which is subordinate to the Xiaogan Office of Hubei Province.
On September 10, 1952, with the approval of the Central South military and political Commission, Lishan county was renamed Dawu county to commemorate the heroic achievements of the people of Dawu Mountain Area in the revolutionary wars.
In March 1959, the Xiaogan special office was abolished, and Dawu county was under the jurisdiction of Wuhan city.
In May 1961, Xiaogan special office was restored, and Dawu County returned to the jurisdiction of Xiaogan special office.

Dawu county is located across the Yangtze River and Huaihe River. It is rich in water resources, with an average annual precipitation of 1097mm. There are three water systems, including Shu River, Shu River and Zhugan river. There are 324 tributaries with a total length of 1216.46 km. Among them, Shu River is located in the west of Dawu County, running through the north and south, with a flow of 52.47 km, a drainage area of 886.1 square kilometers, a passenger water area of 85 square kilometers, and an average annual discharge of 448.3 million cubic meters. The theoretical hydropower reserves of the whole county are 120000 kilowatts, including 60000 kilowatts in huanshui basin, 20000 kilowatts in Jianshui basin and 40000 kilowatts in Zhugan River Basin. Nickel reserves of 240800 tons, mainly distributed in lvwang yinshanzhai, chenjialou, ximaoshan area. Zinc reserves of 930 tons, mainly distributed in Xuanhua bancangnan. Serpentinite reserves are 119872400 tons, 33-38% of which are mainly distributed in lvwangyinshanzhai. There are also barite, fluorite, crystal, marble, quartz and other non-metallic mineral deposits.
