In ancient times, Hannan District belonged to yunmengze and was the place of Chu. After 206 BC, Shaxian County, Shiyang county and zhuanyang county were successively controlled by Jiangxia county. Before May 1949, Hannan area was Xintan Township and synthetic Township under the jurisdiction of Hanyang County of the national government. After the founding of new China, the two townships were merged to form Xintan District of Hanyang county. In December 1956, the new beach area was renamed Dengnan district. In October 1957, dongchengyuan farm was established in Xiaogan area. In June 2001, Dazui township was abolished and merged into Shamao street; shuihong township was abolished and merged into dengjiakou town.
