During the Chenghua period of Ming Dynasty (1465-1487), the lower reaches of the Hanjiang river changed its course, and a section of Guocikou was cut and straightened. The main channel flowed into the Yangtze River from the northern foot of Guishan mountain. Since then, Hankou separated from Hanyang. After that, Hankou rose rapidly and developed into a commercial port by virtue of its geographical advantage of "taking advantage of waterway and being good at shipping".
At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, Hankou was "the most prosperous place in Chu", and it was also known as the four famous towns in the world together with Foshan Town, Zhuxian Town and Jingdezhen.
From the formation of Hankou in the middle of Ming Dynasty to the end of Qing Dynasty, the territory of Jianghan has been under the jurisdiction of Hanyang County, which belongs to Hanyang Prefecture.
During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566), Hanyang county set up the inspection department to manage Hankou town.
During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1662-1722), the inspection office of Hankou was moved from chongxinfang on the South Bank of the Hanjiang River to Hankou on the north bank.
In 1727, the inspection department of Hankou was divided into two divisions, namely, Renyi and Lizhi, which managed the four squares of Juren, Youyi, Xunli and Dazhi in Hankou. Among them, Xunli square is in today's Jianghan District, and the other three squares are in today's Qiaokou and Jiang'an District. Li Zhi branch is located in Wanshou lane, Tongyi street. On top of the two divisions, there is the Tongzhi Department of Hanyang County, and the Yamen department is stationed in the four official halls.
In 1899, Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Huguang, ruled that the imperial court should divide Yangxia and Xiakou, and set up Xiakou hall in Hankou. From then on, it was under the jurisdiction of Xiakou hall.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), Xiakou hall was changed into Xiakou County, and the territory was subordinate to Xiakou County, which was divided into the third district.
In 1926, the national government abolished Xiakou county and established Hankou city. The following year, the government building of Hankou city was built in Tianyuan Shantang (the former site is now Minzhu Street), which is under the jurisdiction of the third district of Hankou city.

In July 1952, the third district of Wuhan city was renamed Jianghan District of Wuhan city. The people's Government of Wuhan City readjusted its division, abolished the Fifth District, and classified the three public security sub districts under its jurisdiction, namely Jiefang District, Xunli district and Gongyuan District, into Jianghan District.
In 1954, the people's governments of 25 streets in Jianghan District were changed into street offices.
In February 1955, the people's Government of Wuhan abolished Huiji, Fucheng and Donghu suburbs, and classified the areas of Hangkong Road, wansongyuan and Jianghan North Road under the jurisdiction of Huiji District into Jianghan District.
In 1956, Wuhan city implemented the system of "urban area with suburb", and the cooperative township of Hongshan District (which was transformed into cooperative commune in 1960) was included in Jianghan District.
From 1958 to 1959, people's communes and branches were established in districts and streets respectively.
In 1961, Jianghan District abolished the people's Commune and restored its original system.
In 1964, Wuhan city put the cooperative commune under the jurisdiction of Hanqiao district.
In 1969, the people's Government of Jianghan District was renamed Revolutionary Committee of Jianghan District.
