In the Southern Dynasty (420-589 AD), Shu county was established as Lujiang County of Yuzhou at the beginning; Shu county was abolished in 448 ad, and lvtingzuo county was established; later, yin'an county was established as Jinxi County.
In Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD), yin'an county was merged into Zongyang, belonging to Xizhou; in the 18th year of kaihuang (598 AD), Zongyang County was changed into Tong'an County, belonging to Tong'an County of Yangzhou.
In the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), Tongan county was first established. In the fourth year of Wude (621 AD), Tongan county was changed to Shuzhou. In the first year of Tianbao (742 AD), Tongan county was restored. In the second year of Zhide (757 AD), Tongan county was changed into Shengtang county and Tongcheng County, with jurisdiction of 33 Li. The Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms (907-979 AD) belong to Tongcheng County, which belongs to daoshu Prefecture in Huainan. They first belong to the Ten Kingdoms and Wu, and then belong to the Ten Kingdoms and Southern Tang and later Zhou.

In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), it was Tongcheng county. In the 17th year of Shaoxing (1147 A.D.), the Deqing army was changed to Anqing army; in the first year of Qingyuan (1195 A.D.), the army was changed to Fu, belonging to Anqing Fu, which is still subordinate to Huainan West Road.

In the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), it was Tongcheng County, initially belonging to Anqing Prefecture of Jiangnan province; in the sixth year of Kangxi (1667), it belonged to Anqing Prefecture of Anhui Province.
The Republic of China (1912-1949) was a territory of Tongcheng county. In 1914, it belonged to Anqing road. In 1928, it was directly under the jurisdiction of Anhui Province; in 1932, it was under the jurisdiction of the first administrative inspector general's office; in 1936, it was under the jurisdiction of Anqing administrative inspector general's office; in 1940, it was under the jurisdiction of the first special district of Anhui Province. In 1935, Zongyang County is now the fourth and fifth districts of Tongcheng. In December 1947, most areas of Lujiang and Tongcheng were divided into Tonglu County, which was under the leadership of the West Anhui Working Committee of the Communist Party of China.
The people's Republic of China (1949 to present), on February 18, 1949, Tongcheng East, South Township, Lujiang, Wuwei two counties, a small number of areas set up Tonglu County, County initially set up Xiangpu town (Baiyun District), in October 1949 moved to Tanggou town (Tangjiagou). On February 24, 1951, it was renamed Hudong county. In January 2021, Anhui Provincial Department of Civil Affairs approved Tongling City to adjust some administrative divisions of Zongyang County.
