Pingnan County is located in neilushan District of Ningde City, between 26 ° 44 ′ - 27 ° 10 ′ N and 118 ° 41 ′ - 119 ° 13 ′ E. It is connected with Ningde City in the southeast, Zhouning County in the northeast, Zhenghe County in the north, Jianou city in the northwest and Gutian County in the southwest. It is 54 kilometers wide from east to west and 50 kilometers long from north to south, with a total area of about 1487 square kilometers.
Pingnan originally belonged to Gutian County. In 1735, the thirteen capitals of yifengli, xinsuli and hengxili in the northeast of Gutian County were established. Shuangxi county is located in the south of Cuiping mountain, so Emperor Yongzheng named it "Pingnan". After the founding of Pingnan County, it belonged to Fuzhou Prefecture. In 1971, the former Fu'an special office moved to Ningde, so it was renamed Ningde area, which belongs to Pingnan County. It is known as "red flag county", "Yuanyang town", "xiaxianggu town", "Younai town" and "hydropower Town" in Fujian Province.

Historical evolution
After Pingnan County was established in 1735, it belonged to Fuzhou Prefecture.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the system of government and Prefecture was abolished, and the three-level system of province, road and county was implemented. In Fujian Province, there were four roads, East Road, West Road, South Road and North Road, and Pingnan was east road. In June of the third year of the Republic of China, four roads, namely minhai, Xiamen, tingzhang and Jian'an, were set up in the province according to the original jurisdiction, and Pingnan belonged to minhai road.

In August 1963, Pingnan was divided into Minhou special area, and the special office was stationed in Minhou.
In July 1970, Pingnan was assigned to Fu'an District, and the special office was stationed in Fu'an; in June 1971, the Fu'an district was renamed Ningde District, and Pingnan belonged to it.

Most areas are above 800 meters above sea level. The average altitude of the whole county is 830 meters. There are more than 300 big and small peaks, and 265 peaks over 1000 meters. Lingxiaxiang dongfengjian, 1627 meters above sea level, is the highest peak in the territory. The lowest point is Yuanping village, Shoushan Township, with an altitude of only 250 meters. The maximum terrain suspension is 1377 meters, which belongs to the middle mountain, low mountain, hilly, basin valley type area. As of 2009, mountainous areas accounted for 81% of the county's total area, while arable land accounted for only 9.1%.
