Minhou County belongs to Yangzhou in Xia and Shang Dynasties, Qimin in Zhou Dynasty, Yue in spring and Autumn period, and Minyue in Warring States period.
In the first year of Qin Shihuang (221 BC), Qin unified the whole country and built Minzhong County in Jinfu.
In the fifth year of emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty (202 BC), Wu Zhu was granted the title of "king of Fujian and Yue" by the Han Dynasty. His capital was established in Yeshan (now Pingshan, Fuzhou City), and the territory was restored to the state of Fujian and Yue. In 112 B.C., Fujian and Vietnam rebelled and were destroyed by the Han Dynasty. They moved their subjects to Jianghuai. In 86 B.C., Fujian was not ruled. In the second year of the first Yuan Dynasty, it was established in Yexian County.
In 196, the first year of Jian'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Ye County was renamed Houguan county.
In the third year of Taikang (282), the eastern part of Houguan county was located in Yuanfeng County, where Fenglie was the first city.
During the reign of Liang Tianjian in the Southern Dynasty (502-519), Yuanfeng and Houguan were merged, which was called the eastern Houguan.

In 623, the sixth year of Wude of Tang Dynasty, Fujian county was established as Houguan County, and in the eighth year of Wude, Houguan county was abolished as Min county. In 933, Min county was changed to Changle district and Houguan county to Minxing county. In the second year of the Qing Dynasty (935), Changle and Minxing were renamed Min county and Houguan county. In the sixth year of Tianfu (941) of the later Jin Dynasty, Min county was renamed Changle district. The next year, it was renamed Changle district. At this time, the two counties were subordinate to Changle Prefecture.

In 1914, Donglu road was renamed minhai Road, and Minhou County was under its jurisdiction. In 1925, Minhou County was directly under Fujian Province. On December 11, 1933, the people's revolutionary government of the Republic of China was established after the Fujian incident. Fujian was divided into four provinces and two special cities. Minhou County was under the jurisdiction of minhai province. In 1934, after the failure of "Fujian change", Fujian set up an administrative supervision area, and Minhou County was under the jurisdiction of the first administrative supervision area of Fujian Province. On October 10, 1944, Minhou County changed its name to Linsen county. In April 1947, Linsen county was directly under Fujian Province.
On August 17, 1949, the Chinese people's Liberation Army liberated Linsen County, which belongs to the fourth administrative supervision area of Fujian Provincial People's government.
In April 1950, Linsen county was renamed Minhou County, subordinate to Minhou special district (the special office is located in Luozhou, Minhou County).
In March 1956, Minhou district was abolished and Minhou County was directly under Fujian Province. On November 5, 1958, it was under the jurisdiction of Fuzhou City.
On August 8, 1959, Minhou special area was restored, and Minhou was under its jurisdiction.
In 1970, it was changed into a special district. In June of the same year, Minhou District moved to Putian and was renamed Putian district.
In 1971, Minhou County was transferred to Putian area.

In the late Qing Dynasty, Min county was divided into 11 districts. Today, only neiqili district and waiqili district (part) are under the jurisdiction of Minhou County.

In the Song Dynasty, Houguan County governed 10 townships and 50 Li.
In Yuan Dynasty, Guizhi township was changed into youyixiang and yousanxiang, and the other nine townships were changed into 37du47li.
In the Ming Dynasty, Xiang was changed into Fang, and the township system was restored, with jurisdiction over 10 townships, 36 capitals and 68 maps. In 1580, Huaian County was incorporated into Houguan county.
In the Qing Dynasty, the system of Ming Dynasty was still followed. Houguan county had four lanes and 61 capitals, with 114 unified maps.
