Liaoyuan City, a prefecture level city in Jilin Province, is located in the central and southern part of Jilin Province. It is located in the upper reaches of Dongliao River and Huifa River. It is named after the origin of Dongliao river. Its geographical profile is "five mountains, one water and four fields". The total area is 5140.45 square kilometers, accounting for 2.8% of the total area of Jilin Province. The urban built-up area is 46 square kilometers. It has jurisdiction over Dongfeng and Dongliao counties, Longshan and Xi'an districts, with a total population of 1.1724 million.
Liaoyuan has a long history and rich cultural heritage. Bronze age has human activities, is one of the important birthplaces of Manchu, Qing Dynasty was opened as the Royal "Shengjing paddock". After the lifting of the ban in 1902, the county system was established and upgraded to prefecture level city in 1983.

Historical evolution
During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Liaoyuan was officially designated as Shengjing paddock. Until 1878, Shengjing general Zeng Qi asked the Qing government to lift the ban on Xianwei paddock on the ground that "most of the sites were privately reclaimed by refugees".
In 1902, at the request of Fengtian military governor, a county was established in the West and east of Liaoyuan. The west is called Xi'an County, and the East is called Dongping County, which is subordinate to Hailong Prefecture of Fengtian province. Xi'an county was originally planned to be built in laohuzuizi, but later it was set in the west side of dagedia (now Longshoushan). In the enclosure, there are many mountains and hills, and the embroidered soil is staggered. There is a danger of valley, which is enough to control the four directions. The road is smooth, and the residents have gathered. Therefore, in 1903, Zeng Qi, the commander of Fengtian army, consulted with Ting Jie, the Minister of famine affairs. The city was based on dageda mountain, reaching Banjiehe River in the west, Dongliao River in the south, and Banjiehe River in the north, covering an area of 541 mu. The nine and a half fences in the county are divided into four guarantees and 16 communities.
In March 1904, Guiliang, the magistrate of Guangxu County, took office. He built the Yamen office and advocated the donation of Chengmen (Dongji, Xining, Nankang and Beishou). Dongping county began to draw the township board, set up Baojia, and divided the whole county into 20 townships, 12 towns and 248 villages.
In 1907, Fengtian province was changed into Liaoning Province, and Xi'an county was subordinate to Liaoning Province.
In 1912, the administrative offices of Xi'an county and Dongping county were established under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province.
In 1914, Hailong mansion was abolished. In June, Liaoning Province was changed to Fengtian province, Xi'an county and Dongping county were under the jurisdiction of Liaoshen road in Fengtian province, and Dongping county was changed to Dongfeng County in March of the same year.
In 1920, Xi'an county and Dongfeng County were directly under Fengtian province.
In 1926, Xi'an county and Dongfeng County were upgraded from third class to second class. Due to the large-scale development of land, the population increased again, and became a famous agricultural distribution center in Fengtian province. Subsequently, various shop gatehouses in the county were established one after another.
In 1929, the Northeast government affairs committee was established, and the provincial system was implemented. Fengtian province was changed into Liaoning Province, and Xi'an county and Dongfeng County were directly under the jurisdiction of Liaoning Province.
During the period of northeast occupation, Xi'an county and Dongfeng County belonged to the puppet Fengtian province first, and then to the puppet Siping province.
On August 31, 1945, Xi'an county was renamed Beifeng County, but it was still called Xi'an county. From November to January of the next year, it belongs to the third special office of Liaobei province.
In February 1946, it belonged to the second special office of Liaoning Province, and in May, it belonged to the second special office of Liaoning Provincial sub committee of the Communist Party of China.
In 1947, Xi'an and Dongfeng counties were liberated.
In July 1948, it was assigned to the third special office of Liaobei province. On October 15, the CPC Liaobei Provincial Committee decided to establish Xi'an. It is directly under Liaobei province. At the same time, the people's Government of Xi'an was established, which was separated from Xi'an County for the first time.
In 1949, it belonged to northern Liaoning Province. After May 1, it belongs to Liaodong province. In July of the same year, Xi'an was changed into a city directly under Liaodong provincial government.
On April 3, 1952, Xi'an city was renamed Liaoyuan city because of its duplicate name with Xi'an City in Shaanxi Province.
In June 1954, Liaodong province was abolished, Liaoyuan City, Xi'an county and Dongfeng County were included in Tonghua special district of Jilin Province, and Liaoyuan city was still directly under the province.
On August 1, 1956, Xi'an county changed its name to Dongliao County, which was subordinate to Huaide District of Jilin Province.
In 1958, Liaoyuan city was assigned to Siping District of Jilin Province. Dongliao county and Dongfeng County are divided into Siping district.
On March 23, 1959, Dongliao county was abolished and merged into Liaoyuan city.
On May 28, 1962, the organizational system of Dongliao county was restored.

The northernmost point is xidagangling, Langtou ridge, erdaohekou and the upper reaches of Yitong River in Dongfeng County, and the central line is connected with Yitong county.

Liaoyuan city is located in the transition zone from Changbai Mountain Area in the east of Jilin Province to Songliao Plain in the West. It is mainly composed of hills with a small number of low mountains in between. The territory is surrounded by mountains, rolling hills, crisscross valleys and gullies, the ground is cut and broken, and mountains, hills, platforms and valleys are crisscrossed. The altitude ranges from 250m to 900m. The highest is in Qingling Nanshan (914m) of Dongfeng County, and the lowest is in Shuangcheng village of Dongliao county (230m). The relative elevation difference is 684m. The remaining veins of hadaling, a branch of Changbai Mountain, extend obliquely from the northeast through the middle of Liaoyuan city to the southwest, and then gradually incline to the northwest and Southeast sides, forming the "double saddle" terrain of Liaoyuan City, which is the highest in the Southwest (above 600 meters above sea level), the highest in the Northeast (500-600 meters above sea level), the slightly lower in the middle (400-500 meters above sea level) and the lowest in the Northwest (350-400 meters above sea level).
The terrain of Liaoyuan city is divided into three types: low mountain, hilly platform and valley plain. Among them, the hilly platform is the most widely distributed, mainly located in the West and North, accounting for 60-70% of the total area, with an altitude of 300-400M and a relative elevation difference of less than 50m. The top of the hill is round, the slope is gentle, the strike is scattered, the surface of the hill is cut and broken, and the foot of the hill is mostly beam shaped platform with dense gullies.
Low mountains are mostly found in the South and northeast of the area, with an altitude of 500-900 meters and a relative altitude of 300-400 meters. Most of the mountains are northeast southwest strike, with complex lithology, mostly granite and sandstone. The top of the mountain is generally round with steep slope and broken terrain. There are few plains, mostly Valley plains, mainly distributed in Meihe and Dongliao river basins. Affected by the low mountains and hills, the plain is sometimes wide and sometimes narrow, distributed along the river, showing branching. The relative height difference is less than 50 meters. The plain is flat and fertile, and its parent material is mainly modern alluvium and loess accumulation.
