Dazhou, known as "TongZhou" in ancient times, is a prefecture level city in Sichuan Province, a natural gas energy and chemical industry base in Western China, a transportation hub, a cultural and commercial center and an ecological and livable regional center in the junction of Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei and Shaanxi. As of 2019, the city has 2 districts, 4 counties and 1 county level cities, with a total area of 16591 square kilometers, registered residence population of 6 million 589 thousand and 400, permanent residents 5 million 741 thousand, and urbanization rate of permanent residents 47.14%. Dazhou is located in the southwest of China and the east of Sichuan. It has an archaeological history of nearly 5000 years and an organizational history of more than 2300 years. Dazhou is an important node city of Chengdu Chongqing economic circle and Northeast Sichuan urban agglomeration, the "East Gate" of Sichuan's opening to the outside world and the regional center city with a population of one million, the main hub of China's highway transportation and the regional sub hub city of Sichuan Province, the bearing city of business service-oriented national logistics hub and the founding city of national green freight distribution demonstration project; It is the east channel of Sichuan Province to reach the sea, and is the regional central city of Sichuan Province to build a comprehensive transportation hub from east to North and the junction of Sichuan, Chongqing and Shaanxi.
In 2020, Dazhou's GDP will reach 211.8 billion yuan, an increase of 4.1%.
In January 2021, Dazhou was selected as the nominated city of national civilized city.
Historical evolution
According to the archaeological excavation of Qinghe Village, Baoen Township, Quxian County in Dangqu basin, it is confirmed that there were human activities in Dazhou city in the late Paleolithic period (around 20000 BC).
Dazhou belonged to Liangzhou in Xia Dynasty and Yongzhou in Yin Shang Dynasty. The earliest indigenous people were the Chou people, who established the Chou state (now tuxi Town, Quxian county). In the early Warring States period, Ba people migrated from the Han River to the Yangtze River Basin, and Dazhou area was included in the Ba kingdom.
In 316 BC, the Qin Dynasty destroyed Bashu, and Dangqu county was set up in Dazhou during the Qin Dynasty and the Western Han Dynasty (314 BC).
In the eighth year of Yongyuan (1996), Xuanhan county was established in the east of Dangqu county. In the sixth year of Jian'an (201), Yizhou Mu Liu Zhang established Brazil County, and Dazhou belongs to Brazil County of Yizhou.
In the third year of Yonghe (347) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the Han Dynasty was destroyed, and Dangqu county was set up in Brazil county. Xuanhan, Hanxing (i.e., Hanchang) and Dangqu county were owned by them.
In the Yongchu period of Liu Song Dynasty (420-422), Xuanhan County, shengdangqu County, was Baqu County, which had jurisdiction over Xuanhan, Shixing, Baqu, Dongguan, Xin'an, Xiapu and Jinxing counties.
In the second year of Datong (536), Baqu county was abandoned and Wanzhou was set up. Seven counties, including Kaiba County, Xin'an County, Wanrong county and Dongguan County, were under the jurisdiction of the government.
In 553, Wanzhou was changed into Tongzhou.
In 607, Tongzhou was changed into Tongchuan county. It has jurisdiction over 9 counties including Tongchuan County, yongmu County, Sangang County, shigu County, Dongxiang County, Xuanhan County, Xinning County, Baqu county and langying county.
Tongzhou was renamed in 618, the first year of Wude in Tang Dynasty. In the third year (620), it was promoted to the general manager's office, and seven prefectures (Tongzhou, Kaizhou, Wanzhou, Quzhou, nanbingzhou, nanshizhou, nanlinzhou) were under the jurisdiction of 27 counties. In the seventh year of Wude, the general manager's office was changed into the governor's office. The governor's office led Kyushu (by adding neighboring prefectures and Pengzhou) to govern 36 counties.
Tang Zhenguan five years (631 years), the waste capital Du Fu. In the first year of Tianbao (712), Tongzhou was changed into Tongchuan county. In the first year of Tianbao (742), Tongzhou was changed into Tongchuan County, with 4743 households and 11804 households. Jurisdiction over nine counties: Tongchuan, yongmu, Sangang, shigu, Dongxiang, Xuanhan, Xinning, Baqu, langying. In the first year of Qianyuan (758), it was renamed Tongzhou.
In 965, Tongzhou was renamed Dazhou. In the Song Dynasty, Dazhou first belonged to Xialu (Fengjie) and then to Kuizhou (Fengjie).
In 1279, it belonged to Xuanwei Department of Sichuan Province. In 1285, it was changed to Kuizhou road in Sichuan Province.
Ming Hongwu nine years (1376), Jiangzhou County, is the capital of Kuizhou. In the ninth year of Zhengde (1514) of Ming Dynasty, it was upgraded to a prefecture level state, belonging to chuandongdao.
In the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Kuizhou capital of Fengjie. In 1728, Dazhou was promoted to Zhili Prefecture. In 1802, Dazhou was changed into suiding Prefecture. Take Dazhou as the name of the county, and add Daxian as Fu Guo Shou county.
In October 1912, suiding government declared its independence from the Qing government, and each county established a military government under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China.
In 1913, suiding Prefecture was withdrawn. It belongs to Dongchuan Road. In the fourth year of the Republic of China (may 1916), Daxian declared its independence from Yuan Shikai's Beiyang government. In the sixth year of the Republic of China (1917), Yan Yu set up the East Sichuan Yasukuni army headquarters in the old suiding Prefecture, and he was appointed commander. In October 1918, Xiong Kewu, commander-in-chief of the Sichuan Yasukuni army and governor of Sichuan Province, was appointed as commander of the seventh division of the Yasukuni army and stationed in Daxian county. At that time, it had jurisdiction over Daxian, Xuanhan, Kaijiang, Wanyuan, Chengkou, Kaixian, Yunyang, Fengjie, Wuxi, Quxian, Yingshan, Yilong, Peng'an, Tongjiang, Nanjiang, Bazhong, Langzhong, Cangxi, Nanbu, Yanting, Zhaohua, Guangyuan, Jiange and Zitong counties.
In 1919, the Kuomintang Daxian office was established in fenghuangtou. In 1933, the special branch of zhonggongda county was established.
In 1935, the government of Sichuan was unified and the 15th administrative supervision district (Zhida county) of Sichuan Province was set up.
On December 10, 1949, the Chinese people's Liberation Army captured Kaijiang and liberated it. Dazhu was liberated on the 11th, Quxian on the 12th, Daxian on the 15th, Xuanhan on the 17th, and Wanyuan on the 29th. So far, all the counties under Dazhou were liberated.
In 1950, the administrative supervision district was changed into Daxian District of northern Sichuan administrative office.
On September 11, 1952, the Central People's Government of the people's Republic of China abolished the administrative districts of Eastern, western, southern and Northern Sichuan, and restored the organizational system of Sichuan Province as Daxian special district of Sichuan Province.
In 1970, Daxian Prefecture was renamed Daxian Prefecture, and the Prefecture was located in Daxian county.
On July 5, 1993, Daxian area was renamed Dachuan area.
On June 20, 1999, Dachuan district was abolished and prefecture level Dazhou city was established. The Municipal People's government was stationed in Heye street, Tongchuan District.
On August 5, 2020, the joint Statistical Conference on the establishment of Wanda Kaichuan Chongqing integrated development demonstration zone was held in Dazhou.
On November 29, 2020, China will join the Dabashan Grand Three Gorges Cultural Tourism Development Alliance.

In 1970, Daxian Prefecture was renamed Daxian Prefecture, and the Prefecture was located in Daxian county. It has jurisdiction over 11 counties including Daxian, Wanyuan, Xuanhan, Kaijiang, Linshui, Dazhu, Quxian, Nanjiang, Bazhong, Pingchang and Tongjiang.
In 1976, Daxian set up Daxian city under the leadership of Daxian Prefecture. Daxian Prefecture is located in Daxian city. It has jurisdiction over 1 city and 11 counties.
In 1979, Baisha industrial and agricultural district (equivalent to county level) was established in Wanyuan County, and the government of the industrial and agricultural district was stationed in Baisha commune. Daxian Prefecture governs 1 city, 11 counties and 1 Industrial and agricultural district.
On July 5, 1993, the State Council approved that Daxian Prefecture and Daxian city should be renamed as Dachuan Prefecture and Dachuan city; Bazhong City, Tongjiang County, Nanjiang county and Pingchang county should be assigned to the newly established Bazhong prefecture (now Bazhong City) and Linshui county should be assigned to Guang'an prefecture (now Guang'an City); Wanyuan county and Baisha agricultural and industrial zone should be abolished, and Wanyuan city should be merged to be managed by Dachuan Prefecture.
On June 20, 1999, the State Council approved the abolition of Dachuan Prefecture and county level Dachuan city and the establishment of prefecture level Dazhou city. Tongchuan District of Dazhou city is set up. The former administrative region of Dachuan city is the administrative region of Tongchuan District, and Shuanglong township of Daxian county is under the jurisdiction of Tongchuan District. Dazhou has jurisdiction over Daxian County, Xuanhan County, Kaijiang County, Qu county, Dazhu County and Tongchuan District. Wanyuan city in the former Dachuan area is directly under the central government of Sichuan Province and is under the management of Dazhou city.
On July 18, 2013, with the approval of the State Council, Daxian county was abolished and Dachuan District of Dazhou city was established. The administrative region of Dachuan district is the former Daxian county (excluding Beimiao Town, Jiangling Town, Beishan Township, Anyun Township, Zitong Township, Jinshi Township, Qingning Township, Longtan Township and mengshuang township); the former Daxian county's Beimiao Town, Jiangling Town, Beishan Township, Anyun Township, Zitong Township, Jinshi Township, Qingning Township, Longtan Township and mengshuang township are under the jurisdiction of Tongchuan District.
As of June 2020, Dazhou has jurisdiction over 7 county-level administrative divisions (2 municipal districts, 1 county-level city, 4 counties) and 200 township level administrative divisions (21 streets, 149 towns, 30 townships). It covers an area of 16605 square kilometers and has a population of 6.92 million. Dazhou Municipal People's government is located at 2 Yongxing Road, Tongchuan District.
