Chongzuo is a place where Luoyue, the ancestors of Zhuang nationality, live together. During the Warring States period, Lingnan was called the place of Baiyue, and Chongzuo was a part of Baiyue. When Qin Shihuang unified China, Chongzuo city now belongs to Xiang county. In Han Dynasty, it belonged to Xiang county and Yulin County. In Sui Dynasty, it belonged to Yulin County. Tang Dynasty belongs to Lingnan West Road. At the end of Song Dynasty, it belonged to Yongzhou. The Yuan Dynasty was established as a provincial system, under which Lu led the prefecture, Fu led the prefecture and Zhou led the county.
In the Ming Dynasty, the provincial system was abolished, and three levels of government, prefecture and county system were set up.

In the 29th year of the Republic of China (1940), the territory belongs to the 12th administrative supervision district (formerly Longzhou District). By the eve of liberation, there were 17 counties in the territory, of which Funan, Suilu and Tongzheng belonged to the fourth district (Nanning District), Zhenjie, Xiangdu and Longming belonged to the Sixth District (Jingxi District), Longjin (formerly Longzhou county), Shangjin, Chongshan, Zuoxian, Ningming, sile, Mingjiang, Pingxiang, Yangli, Wancheng and Leiping belonged to the seventh district (Longzhou District).

On April 23, 1953, Binyang and Chongzuo districts were merged into Yongning district. On March 2, 1956, Guixi Zhuang Autonomous Region was changed into Guixi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture. In November, the State Council approved the abolition of Pingxiang town and the establishment of Pingxiang City, Zhili Guixi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture.
On March 27, 1957, zhendu county directly under the central government of Guixi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture was renamed Tiandeng county. The Western Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture is directly under the jurisdiction of Yongning, Binyang, Heng County, Wuming, Shanglin, Mashan, Chongzuo, Long'an, Longjin, Daxin, Tiandeng, Fusui, Shangsi, Ningming and Pingxiang City. It governs Baise and Yishan. In December, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Prefecture was abolished, and the counties and cities directly under the central government were under the jurisdiction of the newly established Yongning special region. In 1958, Yongning Prefecture governed Yongning, Wuming, Heng County, Binyang, Shanglin, Mashan, Long'an, Shangsi, Fusui, Chongzuo, Daxin, Tiandeng, Ningming, Longjin, Du'an Yao Autonomous County and Pingxiang City. In September, Yongning district was renamed Nanning prefectural committee in the stage of political and social integration. In November, Nanning Prefecture Party committee changed its name to Nanning special zone.
On May 27, 1960, with the approval of the State Council, Longjin county was renamed Longzhou county.
On May 18, 1965, Du'an Yao Autonomous County was separated from Nanning special region and put under the jurisdiction of Hechi special region; on June 26, Shangsi county was separated and put under the jurisdiction of Qinzhou special region.
In 1971, Nanning area was renamed Nanning area. Jurisdiction Yongning, Wuming, Hengxian, Binyang, Shanglin, Mashan, Long'an, Fusui, Chongzuo, Daxin, Tiandeng, Ningming, Longzhou 13 counties and Pingxiang City.
