Historical evolution
Suichang belonged to Yue in Xia, Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, Gumi in spring and Autumn period, and Chu in Warring States period. After Qin Dynasty unified China, it belonged to Taimo County of Kuaiji Prefecture, which was divided into two levels. In Western Han Dynasty, it belonged to Taimo County of Kuaiji Prefecture, which was divided into three levels.
In 280, the first year of Taikang, Emperor Wu of Jin Dynasty, it was renamed Suichang. At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the area was wide, including today's Suichang County, most of Longquan and Qingyuan counties, and part of Jinhua County (formerly Tangxi county).

In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), it belonged to the governor's office of Zhejiang Province, and in the third year of the Republic of China (1914), it belonged to ouhaidao. From 1927 to may 1949, it was the ninth (Lishui), sixth (Lishui) and third (Quzhou) administrative supervision district of Zhejiang Province.
On May 8, 1949, Suichang county was liberated, belonging to the third special district of Zhejiang Province (renamed Quzhou special district in October 1949) and Jinhua special district in March 1955. In October 1958, Songyang county was incorporated. In May 1963, it was transferred to Lishui district.
In January 1982, Songyang county was restored, belonging to Lishui area (now Lishui City).
