Historical evolution
Gaogang district was the capital of Haiyang (now Taizhou) in the Zhou and Qin Dynasties. In the sixth year of Yuanshou (117 BC), Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, hailing county was built. Historical records date back to 937, the first year of the Southern Tang Dynasty. The Qing Kangxi "Yangzhou Fu Zhi" said: "in the Southern Tang Dynasty, jiejichuan town was set up in Taixing County, and was founded and governed in chaixu. In the early Song Dynasty, Yanling village was moved to govern the county. " Chaixu is the ancient name of the port. In 1130, Yue Fei was appointed governor of Tongtai town and also knew Taizhou. Because Taizhou was not in danger, he defeated the Jinbing at nanbaqiao by surrendering chaixu. In the 10th year of Shaoxing (1140), Taizhou's government was once moved to chaixu on the sand of Taixing.
At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, in order to attack Taizhou, Xu Da dredged the river from the mouth of the river to the South Gate of Taizhou. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566), the post road from Taizhou to Taixing passed through the territory, and diaojiadu shop and Gangkou shop were set up. In the Ming Dynasty, the port became an important town in the northwest of Taixing, with port inspection court, port residence and so on.
In the Qing Dynasty, the inspection department was set up at the port, which governed the northwest part of Taixing county. In 1735, the whole county of Taixing was divided into four divisions, and the territory under the jurisdiction of the port inspection department was "Kou". The port has gradually developed into an important port and material distribution center on the Northeast Bank of the Yangtze River. During the period of the Republic of China, all the towns in Gaogang District belonged to Taixing and Taixian respectively, most of which were Taixing.
In April 1949, Su Yu, deputy commander and deputy political commissar of the third field army of the Chinese people's Liberation Army, led the troops directly under the headquarters to Baimamiao (now Baima Town, Gaogang District), and set up the river crossing operation headquarters of the East assault group. On April 23, the Navy headquarters of the East China Military Region of the Chinese people's Liberation Army was established, with Zhang Aiping as commander and political commissar. Baima Temple became the birthplace of the PLA Navy.
On August 20, 1997, the State Council approved the establishment of Gaogang District in Taizhou city. Gaogang district has jurisdiction over seven towns designated from Hailing District, namely, port, diaopu, Xuzhuang, Tianhe, yonganzhou, Baima and yexu. The district government is stationed in port town.
