Baijiantan District Baijiantan District, belonging to Karamay City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is 30 kilometers northeast of the city. In 1956, the oil workers explored here and saw that there was a vast amount of salt and alkali everywhere, so it got its name.
Baijiantan district is located in the northwest margin of Junggar basin, bordering on Tuoli County in the north, bukesai County in the south, Karamay District in the southwest and Wuerhe District in the northeast, with a total area of 1272 square kilometers. Most of the landforms are Gobi (desert), which is located in the typical temperate continental climate zone.
In 2016, the gross local product of Baijiantan area was 2.12 billion yuan. Among them, the added value of the primary industry is 60 million yuan, that of the secondary industry is 910 million yuan, and that of the tertiary industry is 1.15 billion yuan.
By the end of 2015, the total population of Baijiantan district was 56173, including 39613 permanent residents and 16560 temporary residents, with 32 nationalities.
Evolution of organizational system
Before the founding of the people's Republic of China, the Baijiantan area was a Gobi desert. The low-lying area was full of water all the year round, and the area was full of reeds. There were yellow sheep, rabbits and other animals. The herdsmen once named it "Jieran Bulake", which means the place where yellow sheep gather. Later, someone named it "baishuitan", which means there is water on the barren beach.
In 1982, the authority of Baijiantan district was established and abolished in 1984.
In August 1991, the Baijiantan district was restored and established, with jurisdiction over two natural towns (Baijiantan town and Sanping town), a total of 16 new villages and 26 residents' committees.
At the end of 2002, there were 26 Garden communities, 20 community committees and 3 community service centers in Baijiantan district. The district government is located in Baijiantan town.
In 2009, Baijiantan district has jurisdiction over two streets of Zhongxing Road and Sanping Road, 16 communities and 4 floating population management committees.
In May 2015, through the study of the Standing Committee meeting of the municipal Party committee, it was decided that Karamay Petrochemical Industrial Park and Baijiantan district should be operated and managed together.
In January 2017, with the consent of the people's Government of the autonomous region, Karamay Petrochemical Industrial Park (Baijiantan) was renamed Karamay high tech Industrial Development Zone (Baijiantan).
In March 2017, Jinlong town was transferred to Karamay high tech Industrial Development Zone (Baijiantan District) for management, covering an area of about 34 square kilometers, east of Jinshi street, south of national highway 217, west of Jinlong Avenue and north of kuibei railway.
In February 2019, Karamay high tech Industrial Development Zone (Baijiantan District) was renamed Baijiantan district (Karamay high tech Industrial Development Zone).

By the end of 2017, the district had three offices, 20 community neighborhood committees and 5 management committees, including Zhongxing Road sub district, Sanping road sub district and Jinlong town.
In 2019, the district has three offices and 20 neighborhood committees in Zhongxing Road, Sanping road and Jinlong town.
By the end of 2019, the streets of Jinlong town will be transferred to Karamay district. The district has jurisdiction over Zhongxing Road Street, Sanping road street and 19 community neighborhood committees (management committees)

Water resources in Baijiantan district mainly come from Baiyanghe reservoir, Baikouquan groundwater and water diversion project. In 2009, the water supply was 15.484696 million cubic meters, the capacity of regulating reservoir was 19.5 million cubic meters, the capacity of Sanping reservoir was 33 million cubic meters, and the capacity of ecological reservoir was 2.6 million cubic meters.
