Sunan Yugur Autonomous County Sunan Yugur Autonomous County is subordinate to Zhangye City, Gansu Province. It is the only Yugur Autonomous County in China. It is located in the middle of Hexi Corridor and the north foot of Qilian Mountain. It is 650 km long from east to west and 120-200 km wide from south to north, with a total area of 23800 square kilometers (2014). The population of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County is 37579 (2014). In 2013, the total output value of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County is 2.814 billion yuan. There are Qifeng Wenshu Temple scenic spot, Minghua Township scenic spot, Huangcheng scenic spot, horseshoe Temple scenic spot and other famous scenic spots.
Sunan Yugur Autonomous County has won the titles of "national minority family planning advanced unit", "national forest fire prevention advanced unit", provincial "civilized county", "health county", "double support model city county", "national intangible cultural heritage protection advanced collective", etc.
On October 10, 2018, the Gansu Provincial Government approved Sunan Yugur Autonomous County to withdraw from poverty-stricken counties. On July 29, 2020, it will be included in the National Health township (county) naming list of 2017-2019 cycle.
Historical evolution
During the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, many nationalities lived in Hexi area. This area was once a nomadic land of Wusun and Yueshi, and later was occupied by Xiongnu.
From 133 B.C. to 119 B.C., Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty sent Zhang Qian to the western regions, defeated XiuTu and hunxie, the Hun kings who occupied the Hexi area. In 111 B.C., Zhangye county was set up, and Qilian Mountain was officially included in the Central Plains. Later, Hexi Uighurs (ancestors of Yugur nationality) invaded Ganzhou, then occupied the western part of Hexi Corridor, established a state, set up a tent in Zhangye, and ruled Hexi for about 1400 years.
After the revolution of 1911, Ganliang road and ansu road were set up. Most of Sunan Area was under the jurisdiction of ansu Road, which was subordinate to Jiuquan, Gaotai, Linze, Zhangye and Minle counties.
After the founding of new China in 1949, Qifeng, Minghua, Dahe, Kangle, MATI and other districts of Sunan County have established district and township grassroots people's political power on the basis of the original ethnic minority tribes. District and township administrative leaders are elected from the outstanding elements, tribal leaders and religious elites of various nationalities.
In 1952, the party and the government began to make preparations for the establishment of the institutions in this area, and established the Sunan County Working Committee of the Communist Party of China.
On July 18, 1953, it was decided to establish the Yugur autonomous region (county level) on the basis of the former Gaotai Sixth District, Jiuquan Qiming district and Zhangye Kangle district.
From February 14 to 20, 1954, the first people's Congress was held in Hongwan temple, which formally approved the establishment of the people's Government of Sunan Yugur autonomous region (county level), marking the formal establishment of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County.
In 1957, horseshoe, which was originally under the jurisdiction of Minle and Zhangye, was divided into Su County.
In 1959, the administrative divisions of Sunan and Qinghai Province were greatly adjusted. Taodong, bazidun and Youai grass in Sunan were assigned to Qinghai Province, and the chengtan grassland in Qinghai Province was transferred to Sunan County.
In 2004, the establishment of six district offices including MATI, Huangcheng and Minghua was abolished, and the original 23 townships and one town were merged into six townships including Qifeng, Minghua, Dahe, Kangle, MATI and Baiyin, and two towns including Hongwan temple and Huangcheng. To abolish Beitan Township, Dongtan Township, Huajian Township, Maying Township and Yangxiang Township, to establish Huangcheng township; to abolish daquangou Township, Xishui Township and daduma Township, to establish MATI township; to abolish Yangge Township, Hongshiwo Township and Qinglong Township, to establish likangle township; to abolish jiucaigou Township, Shuiguan Township, Xuequan Township and Lamawan Township, to establish Dahe township; to abolish Qiantan Township, Lianhua Township and Mingshan township Haixiang was set up as liminghua township; Qilin Township, Qilian Township, Qiwen Tibetan Township and Qiqing Tibetan Township were abolished and qifengyi township was set up; Baiyin Mongolian township was retained. After the merger, the average area under the jurisdiction of the township increased from 833 square kilometers to 2500 square kilometers, and the average number of people increased from 1450 to 4400. All work will be finished at the end of the year.
At the end of 2008, the county covers an area of 20456 square kilometers, and has jurisdiction over two towns and six townships (including three ethnic townships): hongwansi Town, Huangcheng Town, MATI Tibetan Township, Kangle Township, Baiyin Mongolian Township, Dahe Township, Minghua Township and Qifeng Tibetan Township, with a total of 101 administrative villages. The agricultural population is 7100 households and 24300 people.
According to the sixth census in 2010, there are 33653 permanent residents in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, including 8125 in hongwansi Town, 7002 in Huangcheng Town, 3952 in MATI Tibetan Township, 3046 in Kangle Township, 565 in Baiyin Mongolian Township, 3409 in Dahe Township, 3646 in Minghua Township, 3275 in Qifeng Township, 495 in Gansu sheep breeding extension station, and 138 in Zhangye baopinghe pasture.

Most of Sunan Yugur Autonomous County is located in Qilian Mountains. It is 400 kilometers long in the territory, with an altitude of 2000-3500 meters. Many peaks are more than 5000 meters high. The mountains are steep and towering. The main peak of Qilian Mountain is 5547 meters. In the mountains above 4700 meters above sea level, there is snow all the year round and glacier distribution, which is one of the main water sources for agricultural irrigation in Hexi. Minghua district is located in the middle of the corridor, with an average altitude of about 1600 meters.
