Gangu County is subordinate to Tianshui City, Gansu Province. It is located in the southeast of Gansu Province, northwest of Tianshui City and the upper reaches of Weihe River. It is adjacent to Qinan county and Maiji District in the East, Qinzhou District and Lixian County in the south, Wushan County in the West and Tongwei County in the north. The total area is 1572.6 square kilometers. By the end of 2017, the total population of Gangu County was 643900, with a permanent resident population of 575500.

On April 28, 2019, the Gansu Provincial Government approved the formal withdrawal of Gangu County from poverty-stricken counties.
Evolution of organizational system
In ancient times, Gangu belonged to Yongzhou and was the place for Jirong to multiply. In the ninth year of King Zhouzhuang (688 BC), Duke Wu of Qin conquered Jirong and established Jixian County, which was the beginning of China's county system, known as "the first county in China". Hebei controlled the Weihe River Valley and controlled the throat of Qinlong, which provided favorable conditions for the Qin Dynasty to "open a thousand miles and then dominate Xirong".
In the 43rd year of King Nan of Zhou Dynasty (272 BC), after King Zhao of Qin destroyed qurong, he set up Beidi and Longxi counties, and Ji belonged to Longxi County.
In 221 BC, the first emperor of Qin (Ying Zheng) unified the six countries and implemented the county system. The whole country was divided into 36 counties, of which Longxi County governed Ji county.
In the early Han Dynasty, along the Qin system, in the third year of Yuanding (114 BC) of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty, Longxi County was divided into Tianshui County, and sixteen counties were set up, which was still Ji County, belonging to Tianshui county.
In the first year of Jianning (168), Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the governor of Liangzhou ruled Jixian County, and Ji ruled Liangzhou.
In the Jin and Wei dynasties of the Three Kingdoms (220), Liangzhou moved to Wuwei, and Gangu was still Ji County, belonging to Tianshui county.
In 265, the first year of the Taishi reign of Emperor Wu of Jin Dynasty, it was divided into five counties in Longxi, Liangzhou, Jincheng, and Liangzhou.
In the third year of Taishi (267), Qinzhou moved Shangying to Tianshui County, which belonged to Hebei Province.
In the first year of Yongjia (307), Hebei was abandoned.
In 447, Ji county was changed into dangting County, belonging to Tianshui county.
In the Northern Dynasty and the Northern Zhou Dynasty (557), dangting county was changed into Jicheng County, and then merged into Cucumber county.

In the third year of Wude (620), Emperor Gaozu of Tang Dynasty, it was changed into Fuqiang County, belonging to zhongdufu, Tianshui County, Qinzhou. In this year, Fuqiang and Longxi of Weizhou set up Fuzhou to govern Yongning County.
Wude eight years (625), Fu state waste, the county also belongs to (Qinzhou).
In the ninth year of Wude (626), Yanquan county was analyzed. In the first year of Zhenguan (627), Yibin was renamed. In the third year, Fuqiang was incorporated into the province.
In the first year of zongguangde (763), the Tang Dynasty was occupied by Tubo.
In the third year of Jianlong (962) of song Taizu, Fuqiang village was established. In the third year of Xining (1070) of song Shenzong, Fuqiang city was upgraded.
In 1276, it was changed to Fuqiang County, which was used in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
In 1929, Fuqiang county was changed to Gangu County.
On August 5, 1949, Gangu County was liberated and its Party committee and government were set up in the East Street of the city.
In 1958, Gangu County was merged into Wushan County. In January 1962, it was divided and restored.
