Gongjing District, located in the hilly area of southern Sichuan Basin, is the jurisdiction of Zigong, a famous historical and cultural city. Gongjing, formerly known as "Gongjing", is famous for the existence of dagongjing more than 1400 years ago. In the Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, Gongjing was officially renamed Gongjing. It is an important salt town with a long history and culture, and also one of the birthplaces of well salt.
In 2014, the annual GDP of Gongjing district was 11.222 billion yuan. In May 2015, Gongjing district covers an area of 417.63km2, with a built-up urban area of 9.5km2 and a permanent resident population of 260607.
Evolution of organizational system
Gongjing District in the Qin Dynasty belongs to Fushun and Rongxian areas, belonging to Bajun and Shujun respectively.
In Han Dynasty, Qianwei county was established. Fushun area belongs to Jiangyang County, while Rong county belongs to Nan'an county.
During the reign of emperor Zhang of the Eastern Han Dynasty, well salt was produced in Zigong area. The famous salt wells include Fushi well and Dagong well.
During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, counties and towns were set up because of salt. Fushi county was established in the name of Fushi well.
In Tang Dynasty, shenggongjing town was Gongjing County, subordinate to Rongzhou. In the first year of Wude (618), Gongjing county was set up; in Zhenguan period, Fuyi county was renamed for avoiding the word "Shi" of Emperor Li Shimin.
In Song Dynasty, the name of Fushun County was changed to avoid the word "Yi" of emperor Zhao Kuangyi, and Gongjing town was set up under the name of dagongjing.
In Jiajing period of Ming Dynasty, Gongjing town was renamed Gongjing county.
Zigong was founded on September 1, 1939. The name of Zigong originated from the famous Yanjing, Ziliujing and Gongjing. Gongjing district is the third, fourth and Fifth District of Zigong City.
On December 5, 1949, Zigong was peacefully liberated. In 1950, the third and fourth districts of Zigong merged into the Second District of Zigong City.
In January 1953, the Second District of Zigong was renamed Gongjing District, which belongs to Zigong City, Sichuan Province.

Gongjing area is located in the hilly area in the south of Sichuan Basin. Xushui river of Tuojiang River system runs through the whole area from west to East. Its geographical location is between 104 ° 24 ′ 30 ″ - 104 ° 44 ′ 30 ″ E and 29 ° 08 ′ 10 ″ - 29 ° 27 ′ 30 ″ n, with a total area of 417.6 square kilometers. It is adjacent to Neijiang City, Yibin City and Leshan City.

In the southeast of Gongjing area, there are undulating medium hills, while in the northwest, there are continuous low hills. Xushui river runs through the territory from southwest to northeast, belonging to hilly Valley landform. The surface morphology is composed of positive landform, flat landform and negative landform. In the south, the hills fluctuate, in the north, ridges and streams alternate, and most of them move from southwest to northeast, which is an erosive and denudation landform. Xushui River and its tributaries valley area, the elevation is about 200-300 meters. River valleys generally have two steps. The relative height difference between riverbed and bank terrace is 10-20m. Above the terraces on both sides of the river bank, there are middle hills and shallow hills. The shallow hills are more than the middle hills. The gullies between the hills are vertical and horizontal, and the gullies are short and small, but they are densely distributed.

There are more cloudy and rainy days, more foggy days and less air transparency in the whole year. Sunshine is mainly concentrated in summer. The average sunshine hours over the years is 1247.2 hours, which is one of the areas with less sunshine hours in China.

Brine is the main mineral resource in Gongjing area, which is produced in Changtu town of Ziliujing anticline and Aiye town of Xindian syncline. The properties of brine in different production layers are obviously different. Aiye town is rich in yellow bittern with pH value of 4-6 and barium content. It has been mined for nearly 2000 years. Changtu town is rich in black bittern, pH value is about 7, barium deficiency and late mining.
Natural gas is produced in the southwest end of Ziliujing anticline in Gongjing area, and in the third member of Jialingjiang formation of Lower Triassic in Triassic. During the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1723-1735), there were 31 salt pans in Yongshun well and SHUNFA well. In July 1889, Dongyuan well was drilled and produced abundant gas.
The rock salt body in Gongjing area occurs in the fourth member of Jialingjiang formation of Triassic. It is distributed in the South paraxial part of Ziliujing anticline. It is a small salt forming basin in NE direction, and there are local depressions from west to East. The buried depth is 900-1400m, with a general thickness of 2M and a maximum thickness of 6m. There are more limestone outcrops in Aiye and Changtu towns in Gongjing District, but less in other areas. Limestone reserves of 153 million cubic meters, has been partially exploited. As of September 2011, there are purplish red shale in Gongjing District, with reserves of about 31.5 million cubic meters, clay reserves of about 4 million cubic meters, and building materials resources such as red sandstone, bluestone, river sand, etc.

As of May 2015, there are 297100 people in Gongjing district. Han nationality is the main ethnic group, and there are more than 20 permanent ethnic minorities. Among the permanent population, Yi, Tibetan, Hui, Miao, Tujia, Manchu and so on are the most common ethnic groups.
