The geology of Ding'an County is mainly composed of sand shale, basalt, volcanic limestone, granite and other rocks.
Sand shale is composed of various detrital materials and cements. It was formed in Pliocene of Cenozoic late Tertiary period, 2.2 million years ago. It is the main soil forming parent material of the whole county, mainly distributed in all parts of leiming, Fuwen, pozhai, Xinzhu and juding, and most parts of Longzhou, Dingcheng, Xiangou and Yongfeng. Basalts are olivine basalts formed in the first stage of the tertiary to Quaternary in the late Cenozoic. They were formed 3-4 million years ago and are mostly composed of olivine and pyroxene. They are mainly distributed in the Jinjiling area, including most of Longmen, Huangzhu and Jinjiling farms. The young basalt is volcanic limestone, which is formed later than the first stage basalt. It is mainly distributed in most parts of Lingkou, Hanlin, Longtang and some parts of Longmen. Granite belongs to the fourth stage of Mesozoic intrusive rocks, formed between the early and late Cretaceous, 135 million years ago. Because it is often covered by sand shale deposits, it is mistaken for sand shale. It is mainly distributed in Longtang, Longmen, Hanlin, pozhai and marginal strip in the south of Ding'an County.
Ding'an County, located in the northern part of Hainan Island, belongs to Leiqiong sag in South China fault depression of Huaxia fault block area. It is located in the Pacific geosynclinal fold area, Southeast Coastal fold system and Hercynian maogeosynclinal fold belt.
Fold structure in the territory: fold in Indosinian structural stage only occurs in Hanlin area; fold in Yanshan structural stage is weak; fold in Himalayan structural stage is mostly covered by Quaternary. According to the spatial distribution and orientation of faults, it can be divided into four groups: ne, NW, Sn and EW.

The landform of Ding'an County is long in the north and South and narrow in the East and West. The terrain is gently inclined from south to north, forming a posture of high in the South and low in the north, from 512.70 meters above sea level to 15.20 meters below sea level. The geomorphic changes in the whole county are characterized by various types and different causes. There are not only platform and residual Hill landforms composed of sand shale, basalt, volcanic limestone and granite, but also flat terrace landforms formed by shallow sea sediments and river alluvium. In the south, West and Southeast, there are rolling hills, nanniuling with the southern boundary, jiafengling and xipoling in the west, and wugailing in the East, which constitute the high hills (250-500m above sea level) and low hills (100-250m above sea level). The northern part is mostly flat terraces (below 50 meters above sea level), and the northern part of the central part is surrounded by Jinjiling, which forms a landform of crisscross hills and platforms.
Ding'an County can be divided into high hills, low hills, platforms, terraces and water areas, with a total area of 1.766464 million mu. The altitude of high hilly land is between 250-500 meters, covering an area of 5331300 mu, accounting for 3.02% of the total area of the county; it is mainly distributed in the southern areas of Zhongrui, Longtang, Hanlin, Dongfanghong Farm, etc. The altitude of low hilly land ranges from 100 to 250 meters, covering an area of 531.78 million mu, accounting for 30.12% of the total area of the county. It is mainly distributed in Yongfeng, Huangzhu, Longmen, pozhai, Xinzhu, Lingkou, Hanlin, Longtang and other areas. The platform is 50-100 meters above sea level, covering an area of 75006.53 million mu, accounting for 42.49% of the total area of the county, mainly distributed in juding, leiming, Fuwen, Xiangou, Dingcheng and other areas. Terraces are below 50 meters above sea level, covering an area of 372431 mu, accounting for 21.08% of the total area of the county.
