In 1369, Fangcun was under the management of Panyu county and Nanhai county. In 1937, Fangcun was transferred to Guangzhou.
In 1950, the people's Government of Guangzhou established Xinjiao District in the southeast suburb, Baiyun District in the north suburb and Fangcun District in the south suburb in order to strengthen the Rural Leadership in the suburbs. Fangcun began to become an administrative unit at the district level.
In 1954, the CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee abolished the system of Fangcun District, and the agricultural mouth of the former Fangcun District was incorporated into Xinjiao district. The residents were assigned to Henan district (now Haizhu District).
In 1957, the municipal government decided to merge Baiyun, Huangpu and Xinjiao (including Fangcun) into the suburbs of Guangzhou.
In 1958, Hainan, Haibei, Haizhong, Longxi, zengjiao, wuyanqiao, Shabei and Hengsha, which originally belonged to Nanhai County, were assigned to Guangzhou, and the suburbs were further expanded. Hailongwei and wuyanqiao in Nanhai county are under the jurisdiction of Hedong people's commune. Fangcun area is composed of Fangcun town and Hedong people's commune.
In 1960, the municipal government established Fangcun City People's commune. Later, Fangcun District was changed and the "people's Government of Fangcun District" was established. The administrative system at the district level was implemented. However, in 1962, it was merged and returned to the suburbs of Guangzhou.
In 1984, Hedong District Office was set up in Fangcun District, and later it was changed into "Dongzhen people's government". Fangcun area is divided into urban and rural areas.
In 1985, due to urban development, the government divided Guangzhou into eight districts: Yuexiu, Dongshan, Liwan, Haizhu, Baiyun, Huangpu, Tianhe and Fangcun.
