Historical evolution
In the late Neolithic age, Chinese ancestors lived and multiplied here. Later, due to the crustal tectonic movement, it was occupied as Zeguo.
During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the county was still in the vast Dongting, with only Jishan, Mingshan, Songtian and Taiyangshan on the surface.
In June of the second year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1852), the Ouchi river dike burst in Shishou County, Hubei Province. Due to frequent disrepair, in 1860, the Yangtze River was flooded, with a large amount of sediment pouring southward from the original breach and pouring directly into Dongting. At the end of tongzhi (around 1874), a number of islets were deposited in the north of Dongting Lake. Among them, Wuzui and the South Bank of beizhou newly deposited a long and narrow islet. Because it was located in the south of beizhou, the local people called it "Nanzhou". After that, Zhouzhu silted up and formed a hundred Li fertile field, which was generally called "Nanzhou". With the formation of Nanzhou, people from all over the country moved to Milu village, surrounded the dykes and opened up wasteland. It was under the jurisdiction of Huarong, Yueyang, Hanshou, Yuanjiang, Anxiang and Changde counties. In 1895, Wu Dacheng, the governor of Hunan Province, wrote a memorial. The Qing government approved that the boundary of six counties should be cut off, and "Nanzhou Zhili hall Fumin Fu Fu" should be set up in Wuzui. In 1897, Wu Dacheng moved to the nine capitals.
In October 1913, the Hunan governor's office ordered that Nanzhou hall be abolished and renamed Nanzhou county. On June 8, 1914, Nanzhou county was renamed Nanxian according to the order of the Ministry of internal affairs.
At the beginning of the founding of new China, Nanxian was assigned to Changde district. In December 1962, it was changed to Yiyang district. After July 1994, it was changed to Yiyang City.
