Yueyang County, belonging to Yueyang City of Hunan Province, is located in the northeast of Hunan Province, connecting Tongcheng County of Hubei Province in the East, Pingjiang County in the southeast, Miluo City in the south, Yuanjiang City and Nanxian County in the southwest, Huarong County and Junshan District in the west, Linxiang City, Yunxi District, Yueyanglou district and Junshan District in the north.
Yueyang County covers a total area of 2716.12 square kilometers. By the end of 2009, it had 12 towns and 8 townships under its jurisdiction, with a total population of 706746. The built-up area of towns and townships reached 30 square kilometers, with an urban population of 225000, and the urbanization level was 31.9%. Ten high-yield, high-quality and efficient bases have been built in agriculture, including Taxus chinensis, high-quality rice, high-quality fruit, famous tea, vegetables and lean meat pigs. The industry has initially formed eight production series including textile, building materials, machinery manufacturing, clothing, paper making, medicine, chemical industry, mineral and agricultural and sideline products processing. Historical evolution
Yueyang county is named after the county government, which is located in the south of Tianyue mountain (Mufu mountain). Yueyang County was set up in Miluo City and Pingjiang county at that time, while baling county is located in the urban area of Yueyang. The place names of later generations have changed.
Yueyang County has a long history. Xia and Shang are the places of Sanmiao. The Western Zhou and the Eastern Zhou belong to Chu. Qin belongs to Luo County, Changsha County. The Western Han Dynasty was Xiajun County of Changsha. In the Eastern Han Dynasty, Xiajun County belonged to Changsha County. The Three Kingdoms belonged to Wu and Changsha County. In the first year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty (AD 280), baling county was established in the west of Xiajun County, belonging to Changsha County. Baling county was set up in the 16th year of Yuanjia (439) in the Southern Song Dynasty. Baling county was changed to Bazhou in the 9th year of kaihuang (589), Yuezhou in the 11th year, Luozhou in the 1st year of Daye (605), and baling County in the 3rd year. In Tang and Song Dynasties, baling County belonged to Yuezhou (baling county), in Yuan Dynasty it belonged to Yuezhou Road, and in Ming and Qing Dynasties it belonged to Yuezhou government.
In 1913, Yuezhou government was abolished, and baling county was changed into Yueyang County. After that, Yueyang County was established as the first administrative supervision district of Hunan Province.
Yueyang County was peacefully liberated on July 20, 1949, under the jurisdiction of Changsha special office, which was renamed Xiangtan special office in September 1952. On January 2, 1960, with the approval of the State Council, it was analyzed that Chengguan town and Chenglingji town of Yueyang County were Yueyang cities, which were managed by Yueyang County. On October 20, 1962, the State Council decided to abolish Yueyang City and restore it to Chengguan town of Yueyang County. On September 22, 1964, Yueyang special office was set up, which belongs to Yueyang County. On October 29, 1975, the State Council sent a letter to restore Yueyang City, which is under the jurisdiction of Yueyang administrative office as well as Yueyang County. Approved by the State Council on October 20, 1981, the people's Government of Hunan Province announced on November 10 that Yueyang county should be abolished and merged into Yueyang City, which is subordinate to Yueyang Prefecture. In February 1983, Yueyang City was promoted to a city under the jurisdiction of the province. On July 13 of the same year, with the approval of the State Council, the Hunan Provincial People's government announced the restoration of the organizational system of Yueyang County, which is under the jurisdiction of Yueyang City. Yueyang county is subordinate to Yueyang City up to now.
In 1996, guangxingzhou town and Xushi town were assigned to Junshan District of Yueyang City. So far, Yueyang County has 12 towns and 11 townships: Yuetian Town, Maotian Town, Gongtian Town, Xitang Town, Zhangguying Town, rongjiawan Town, Baixiang Town, huangshajie Town, Lujiao Town, Matang Town, Xinqiang Town, qiongkou Town, Sanhe Town, Changhu Town, Zhongzhou Town, Yunshan Town, gantian Town, Buxian Town, Yanglin Town, Rao Village Town, Xiangsi Town, Kangwang town and Xinkai town.
On July 10, 1997, it was agreed to abolish Xinkai Township and establish Xinkai Town, with the administrative region of Xinkai township as the administrative region of Xinkai town. So far, Yueyang County has jurisdiction over 13 towns and 10 townships. With the approval of Yueyang Municipal government, the East Dongting Lake Management Committee was officially established on August 28, 2000 as a first-class organization for the unified management of East Dongting Lake.

By the end of 2002, Yueyang County had a total area of 2930.35 square kilometers and a total population of 750237, including 96231 non-agricultural population. It governs 14 towns (Yuetian, Maotian, Gongtian, Xitang, Boxiang, Zhangguying, Matang, Lujiao, rongjiawan, Xinqiang, Liukou, huangshajie, Xinkai, Buxian), 9 townships (Sanhe, Changhu, Zhongzhou, Yunshan, gantian, Yanglin, Rao village, Xiangsi, Kangwang), with a total of 638 villages.
In 2005, Kangwang Township, Sanhe Township and Xitang town of Yueyang County were put under the jurisdiction of Yueyanglou district. The administrative system, administrative region, name of administrative district and government residence of two townships and one town remained unchanged (No.33 of xiangminxingfa). The landform of the county inclines from Mufu mountain in northeast to Dongting Lake in southwest. Yueyang County has a dense water network. There are three water systems of Xinqiang River, Miluo River and Dongting Lake in the county. The main rivers are Xinqiang River, Feijia River and Pingqiao River, which flow directly to the East Dongting Lake, and Luoshui River, which flows directly to the South Dongting Lake. There are 63 main and branch rivers in the county (59 in the East and 4 in the South). The main stream of Xinqiang river has a total length of 115.40 km. Shagang River and Yougang River are two tributaries of Xinqiang river. Shagang river originates in Pingjiang County, passes through Yuetian, Tieshan reservoir, Gongtian and Yanglin to sangangzui of Liukou Town, and then joins the mainstream of Yougang river. The drainage area of the county is 974.69 km2. Yougang river originates in Linxiang City, enters the county from Xitang, and reaches sangangzui through Liukou It flows into the main stream of Xinqiang River, covering an area of 275 square kilometers. Shagang River and Yougang river flow from sangangzui to Dongting Lake via Xinqiang and rongjiawan. The main stream is 26.80 km long and the drainage area is 418 square km. Luoshui river originates from Guifeng village, Zhangguying Town, passes through Yuefang, buxianqiao and Guanwang, and enters into Guluo city. It is 42 km long in the county, with a drainage area of 133.20 square kilometers.
There are Dongting Lake connected with the Yangtze River and inner lake connected with rivers in the county. East Dongting Lake covers an area of 1327.80 square kilometers. There are 22 lakes in the county.
