Ningxiang Ningxiang City, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Hunan Province, is managed by Changsha City. Huitang Hot Spring is one of the three hot springs in China. Mount Jishan miyin temple is a millennium old temple. More than 1500 bronzes, such as Siyang fangzun, renmian Ding and Xiangwen large bronze cymbals, have been unearthed. It is known as the "bronze cultural center of South China". On April 8, 2015, the State Council officially approved the establishment of Xiangjiang New Area in Hunan, becoming the 12th National New Area in China and the first national new area in Central China. Xiangjiang New Area in Hunan is located on the West Bank of Xiangjiang River, including Yuelu District, Wangcheng district and some areas of Ningxiang County (now Ningxiang city) in Changsha City, covering an area of 490 square kilometers.
On April 12, 2017, with the approval of the State Council, it was agreed to abolish Ningxiang County and establish Ningxiang city at the county level, with the former administrative region of Ningxiang County as the administrative region of Ningxiang city.

In 2007, the Department of civil affairs of Hunan Province approved to change the name of Renmin township of Ningxiang County to Jinzhou township. Hunan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs approved that the two villages of chating temple and shitoukeng in Shuangjiangkou town of Ningxiang County should be put under the jurisdiction of Chengjiao township. In the same year, Dachengqiao township was abolished and Dachengqiao town was established. Qingshanqiao township was abolished and qingshanqiao town was established.
In 2009, Jinzhou township was set up as a town.
In 2013, the Department of civil affairs of Hunan Province approved the cancellation of datunying Township and the establishment of datunying town. Jishui River, also known as "Jishui" and "Yutan River" in ancient times, originates from Jishan mountain in Ningxiang City, Hunan Province, flows into the urban area of Changsha from west to East, and flows into Xiangjiang River at the junction of Xinkang Township and gaotangling street in Wangcheng District of Changsha City, with a total length of 144 km and a drainage area of 2750 square kilometers, known as the mother river of Ningxiang city.
Huangcai reservoir is located in tieshanli, 3.5km west of Huangcai Town, in the upper reaches of Jishui, a tributary of Xiangshui River, and 52.5km away from Ningxiang city. The area of rainfall collection is 240.8 square kilometers, the average annual rainfall is 1436.4 mm, the average annual runoff is 183 million cubic meters, the total reservoir capacity is 153 million cubic meters, the normal water level is 166 meters, the corresponding reservoir capacity is 126 million cubic meters, the effective reservoir capacity is 124 million cubic meters, and the reservoir capacity coefficient is 0.68. The reservoir is mainly irrigated and has comprehensive benefits such as power generation, flood control and breeding.
