Historical evolution
Shishou is named after the stone isolated from Shishou mountain.
In the fifth year of Taikang in the Western Jin Dynasty (284), Shishou was set up as a county, and the word Shishou (named Gushi by the river) appeared for the first time in history.
In 964, Shishou was divided into two counties. In the West was Shishou county with Xiulin mountain, in the East was Jianning county with chagang mountain. Shenzong Xining six years (1073), abandoned Jianning County into Shishou County, the county is located in chagang mountain (in Shishou tiaoguan town). In 1086, Shishou county was divided into two parts, Jianning County in the East and Shishou County in the West. Shishou county was relocated to Xiulin mountain, and Jianning county was still in chagang mountain (in tiaoguan town of Shishou). Huizong Chongning five years (1106) to abolish Jianning County, back to Shishou county.
In 1949, it belonged to Mianyang special area.
In 1951, it belonged to Jingzhou district.
On May 27, 1986, the State Council approved the abolition of Shishou county and the establishment of Shishou City (county level).

geographical position
Shishou is a subtropical monsoon climate zone. Sufficient light, abundant heat and long frost free period. The total annual solar radiation of the whole city is 104-110 kcal / cm2, the annual sunshine hours are 1800-2000 hours, the annual average temperature is 15.9-16.6 ℃, the annual accumulated temperature is ≥ 10 ℃, the annual frost free period is 242-263 days, and the rainfall in most years is 1100-1300 mm. There are enough climate resources for crops to grow. The precipitation from April to October accounts for 80% of the whole year, the solar radiation accounts for 75% of the whole year, and the accumulated temperature of ≥ 10 ℃ is 80% of the whole year. The climate conditions of synchronous water and heat and consistent with agricultural production season are suitable for the growth and development of various crops. Shishou is located near 30 degrees north latitude, and the climate is very complex. Deep inland, less affected by the ocean, forming a typical continental climate.
natural resources
land
Shishou has a wide range of land suitability, good planting conditions, large biomass and strong production capacity. It is mainly distributed in the southwest red soil hills, the Southern Loess Plateau, the alluvial plain and lacustrine plain along the river. According to the results of the second national soil survey, there are 4 soil types, 7 soil subclasses, 12 soil genera and 99 soil species in the county. From the riverbed to the hillock, the soil texture gradually changes from sandy to clayey, and the soil types also include fly sand, lime sand, lime oil sand, lime soil and loess. By the end of 1997, there were 11 kinds of mineral resources and 2 mineral deposits in Shishou. The main mineral resources proved include quartzite, quartz sand, monazite, granite, potash feldspar, calcite, mica, copper, lead, zinc and phosphorus. The top five mineral resources in the province are granite. The main mineral resources proved are 1.4 billion tons of granite, 1145 tons of monazite, 836 tons of copper and 566 tons of lead, 292 tons of zinc.
water
The water area of the city is 460 square kilometers, including 220000 mu of aquaculture water surface, 44 lakes, and 19 lakes over 1000 mu. The larger lakes are Shangjin lake, Zhonghu lake, and Mitsubishi lake. The river bed of the Yangtze River has gone through changes, creating a total area of 460000 mu in Shishou, which is divided into three old areas: beinianzi, heiwawu and shatanzi. These are natural places for the development of aquaculture. Apart from the "four big fish" of green, grass, silver carp and bighead carp, aquaculture also has the characteristics of cage eel, wild crayfish and large surface river crab, and has built two national seed farms, such as old River Yangtze River parent fish and Zhonghu changqiwei.
mineral products
There are more than 20 kinds of underground mineral deposits in Shishou, including lead, zinc, copper, monazite, beryl, granite, natural gas and mineral water
Lead, zinc and copper are mainly distributed in the barite vein of the fault zone of liehuoshan in the East, with a tendency of 20 ° to 25 ° in the north and extending in the southeast with an inclination of 50 ° and narrowing from north to south. The total length is 600 meters. There are 15 large and small ore bodies. The ore grade is 0.41-1.66% for copper, 0.56-1.05% for lead and 0.50-1.05% for zinc. The reserves are 840 tons of copper, 3000 tons of lead and zinc. In addition, there are associated minerals such as silver.
Monazite is mainly used to add metal alloy to improve elasticity, toughness and strength. It will not deform at high temperature. It is suitable for manufacturing main parts of jet aircraft and missiles, as well as engine and heat-resistant mechanical parts. The reserves of shihuayan, qingzhugou and jiufogang have been proved, with reserves of 2003 tons and 485 tons respectively And 269 tons.
Beryl, beryllium (be) in beryl. Beryllium is an important raw material for national defense industry. Because beryllium can emit strong neutrons under the action of a-ray, it is used as a neutron source for making hydrogen bomb detonator of atomic reactor. In the components of an atomic reactor, the neutron reflector and reducer made of beryllium can increase the power of the reactor. At the same time, beryllium can also be used as protective shell and some parts of spaceship, missile and rocket. Beryllium is also an additive of high energy materials for rocket and jet aircraft. It has been proved that there are three mineral spots: tanchan temple, Wangjia temple and Wufen temple.
Granite can be used in chemical production because of its acid corrosion resistance. At the same time, granite can be used as building decoration materials because of its hard lithology, slightly dense, magnificent color and good gloss. The distribution area of granite in Shishou City is 150 square kilometers, and the reserves reach 200 million cubic meters. The two mining areas of Laohuchong and qingzhugou in Taohuashan area have been proved by aerial survey, with reserves of 2.25 million cubic meters and 5.5 million cubic meters respectively.
population
In 1996, Shishou City covered an area of 1427 square kilometers with a population of about 620000. It has jurisdiction over 3 streets, 9 towns and 4 townships: Bijiashan street, Xiulin street, Dongfang street, Xinchang Town, Henggou Town, Xiaohekou Town, Taohuashan Town, tiaoguan Town, huajialong Town, Gaojimiao Town, Nankou Town, Tuanshansi Town, Renmin Dahuan Township, Jiaoshanhe Township, Jiuheyuan Township and Maocaojie township. The municipal government is stationed in Xiulin.
In 1997, Maocaojie township was replaced by Gaoling township.? Dongfang street was abolished and Dongfang town was established. So far, Shishou City has jurisdiction over 2 streets, 11 towns and 3 townships.
According to the fifth census in 2000, the total population of Shishou City is 602649, including 71472 in Xiulin street and 4912 in Bijiashan street
