The lakeside area is located in the southwest margin of the North China platform, on the Huaxiong Shangyuan fold belt and between the Xiaoshan and Huanghe grabens. The geological structure system belongs to the front arc of "Qilianshan lulianshan Helanshan" mountain shaped structure, and also a part of Sanmenxia basin. Sanmenxia ancient basin was formed at the end of Mesozoic 80 million years ago, which was controlled by the combination of Taihang mountain uplift belt of Xinhua Xia system and the East-West structural system of Qinling Mountains. The occurrence, development and combination of these two structural systems affected and regulated the occurrence, development and evolution of the basin at the same time. The north and south sides of the basin are controlled by faults, and the south margin is the eastward extension of Huashan fault. The northern margin is the south slope fault of Zhongtiaoshan, forming a semi closed symmetrical fault basin with deep in the South and shallow in the north. The basement consists of pre Sinian metamorphic rocks, Sinian marine sedimentary strata, Carboniferous and Permian coal measures strata, medium basic extrusive rocks and intrusive rocks of various ages. There are Wentang ancient island and cizhong ancient land in the basin, which correspond to each other in the near east-west direction. The two ancient land ridges divide the basin into four depressions. The Dongpo depression is in the north of cizhong ancient land, the Jiaokou depression is in the south, and the Yelu depression is the deepest, with a sedimentary thickness of 2800m. About 2 million years ago, due to the influence of the Himalayan movement, the lakeside area began to rise, the lake basin ended, the rivers ran through, and the terraces developed, and the area is still in the rising period.
