In the Neolithic age, there were human activities, including Yangshao cultural site and Longshan cultural site.
In the Western Zhou Dynasty, it belonged to the state of Wei.
In the spring and Autumn period, the state of Wei set up Puyi (now Changyuan city) and Kuangyi in Changyuan.
During the Warring States period, Kuangyi and Puyi of Wei were annexed by Wei and set up as the first Yuanyi.
In the Qin Dynasty, the capital was changed to Changyuan county.
In the Western Han Dynasty, it was named Changyuan county. PingQiu county and the Marquis of Changluo were newly established. Xinmang changed Changyuan County into changgu county.
In the Eastern Han Dynasty, the Marquis state of Changyuan and PingQiu county were established. Jianwu five years (29 years), the restoration of the long marquis. In the 15th year of Jianwu (39th year), the Marquis of Changluo was abolished.

In the Southern Dynasty, Emperor Wu of Song Dynasty established Yanzhou and governed Changyuan. In the eighth year of Taiping Zhenjun (447), Changyuan was incorporated into the outer Yellow River (now northeast of Qi County, Southeast of Lankao). Jingming three years (502), the restoration of Changyuan County, still belongs to the East County. In the Eastern Wei Dynasty and the Northern Qi Dynasty, Li remained unchanged.
In the early Sui Dynasty, it was still named Changyuan county. In the 16th year of kaihuang (596), the county government was transferred to fugucheng (today's nansipo area), Changyuan county was changed to Kuangcheng county. In the first year of Daye (605), Kuangcheng county was abandoned and merged into Changyuan, which belonged to Dongjun.

In the Five Dynasties, Kuangcheng was changed into Changyuan in Houliang, belonging to Kaifeng Prefecture, the eastern capital. Kuangcheng county was changed into Kuangcheng County in later Tang Dynasty, belonging to bianzhou. Later Jin Dynasty, later Han Dynasty and later Zhou Dynasty remained unchanged.
In the first year of song Jianlong (960), Kuangcheng was changed into Heqiu county. In the second year of Dazhong Xiangfu (1009), it was renamed Changyuan county.
In the early Yuan Dynasty, the county was changed to Baozhou, and soon it was changed to Changyuan county.
