Historical evolution
In the Xia Dynasty, Yundi was the city of Xuzhou. In the Shang Dynasty, Yuncheng was called Bi (the old city was in the area of xiaogudui in the north of the county). The Shang king Zuyi once moved his capital here.
In the spring and Autumn period, in the winter of the fourth year of Duke Cheng of Lu, the state of Lu built a city named Yun to strengthen its defense. This is the origin of Yuncheng.
