In the first year of Zhongxing (958) in the Southern Tang Dynasty, Taining County was promoted to Guihua county. As early as the Neolithic age, human beings lived and multiplied here. Taining is one of the 21 Soviet counties in the central government. There are revolutionary historical sites such as the Red Army Street, the headquarters of the Oriental army, the site of the dayangzhang battle, etc. in 2004, Taining was listed as one of the "100 red classic tourist attractions" in China.

Historical evolution
Taining, also known as Shancheng, used to be jinquanchang (later changed to jinchengchang) and Guihua Town in Suian (later changed to Suicheng).
In the Neolithic age, there were human activities in the county. In the Zhou Dynasty, it was the "seven Min" (the ancient min tribes with snakes as totems scattered all over Fujian at that time). In the late Warring States period, it was the territory of the king of Fujian and Yue.
At the beginning of the Han Dynasty, it belonged to Minyue state and later to Kuaiji County; at the end of the Han Dynasty, it belonged to Xiaoxiang, Jianan County, Sunwu. In the third year of Yong'an (260), it belonged to sui'an County, which was newly established in Jian'an county. Its jurisdiction includes Jianning, Taining and Ninghua counties and some areas of Qingliu and Mingxi. The county government is located in gaoshazhou, which is now three miles west of Jianning county. In the Western Jin Dynasty, it still belonged to Jian'an county and sui'an county. In 405, the first year of Yixi reign of emperor an in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, Suian county was changed to Suicheng County, and its subordination and jurisdiction remained unchanged. From the establishment of Suian County in the third year of Wu Yong'an to the change of its name in that year, Suian County existed for 145 years.
In the Sui Dynasty, Suicheng county was abolished, which was first incorporated into Jian'an County of Quanzhou, and then returned to Shaowu County of Fuzhou (later renamed Linchuan county). In the fourth year of Wude of Tang Dynasty (621), the former Suicheng county was separated from Shaowu County, and Suicheng county was reestablished, belonging to Jianzhou of Jiangnan Dao. In the third year of Zhenguan (629), Suicheng county was abolished and incorporated into Shaowu. From Suian to Suicheng, it has existed for 190 years. After Suicheng was merged into Shaowu County, it was called jinquanchang. The jurisdiction of jinquanchang is the same as that of Suian and Suicheng.
In the second year of gaozongqian's reign (667), Ninghua county (including some areas of Qingliu and Mingxi) was separated from jinquanchang and set up another Huanglian town (Huanglian town was upgraded to Huanglian County in 734). After Huanglian town was delimited, jinquanchang was under the jurisdiction of Taining and Jianning counties and some villages in Mingxi. In 688, the former Jiangle County was divided from Jian'an county and restored to Jiangle County, which was under the jurisdiction of Jianzhou. Jinquanchang was transferred from Shaowu county to Jiangle County, and its administration has been transferred to Taining, and it is renamed jinchengchang. Jinquanchang has been established for 59 years.
In the second year of Qianyuan reign of emperor suzong of Tang Dynasty (759), Dong juezuo, Fujian defense envoy and Ning naval envoy, asked to divide the former sui'an county (namely Jincheng site) into two towns, Guihua Town and Huanglian town. Guihua Town is now Taining (including villages in Yizhou area of Mingxi); Huanglian town is now Jianning. In the history of Jiancheng county and Taitai County, they had been together for 500 years (260 ~ 759). Since then, jinchengchang has been in existence for 71 years. Guihua Town belongs to Jianzhou. In the third year of zongdali (768) of the Tang Dynasty, Fuzhou Jiedu envoy was dismissed and Fujian dutuanlian observation and disposal envoy was set up. Guihua Town still belonged to Jianzhou.
In the Five Dynasties, the town was abandoned as a field, and in the first year of Zhongxing in the Southern Tang Dynasty (958), the field was promoted to Guihua County, which was subordinate to Jianzhou (later changed to Zhenan army and Zhenwu Army).
In 907, the first year of Kaiping in the Later Liang Dynasty, Wang Shenzhi was granted the title of king of Fujian by Liang and ruled Fujian. During the Yonglong period of Fujian Province (939 ~ 942), in order to defend the Southern Tang Dynasty, Guihua Town became an important military town where Zuo pushe, Zou Yongfu and others put in heavy troops. In the eighth year of Tianfu in the later Jin Dynasty (943), Wang Yanzheng became emperor in Jianzhou, and Guihua Town was still directly under Jianzhou (later renamed Zhenan army and Zhenwu Army). In 944, the Southern Tang Dynasty conquered Jianzhou. In the second year, it was changed into Yong'an army and later into Zhongyi army. In the fourth year of Baoda in the Southern Tang Dynasty (946), Guihua Town was promoted to Guihua field, belonging to Yong'an army and Zhongyi army. From the establishment of Guihua Town in the second year of Qianyuan period of Tang Dynasty to the change of town into field in the fourth year of Baoda period of Southern Tang Dynasty, Guihua Town existed for 187 years and Guihua field for 12 years. Guihua Town has been in existence for 199 years.
In the first year of Yuanyou (1086) of the Song Dynasty, ye Zuqia, a native of the city, asked the court to change the name of the county. Song zhezong gave the name of the county "Taining", the name of Confucius' palace in Qufu, Shandong Province, to Shao Wujun.
The Yuan Dynasty belonged to Shaowu road. It belonged to Shaowu Prefecture in Ming and Qing Dynasties.
At the beginning of the Republic of China, it belonged to Beilu road and Jian'an Road, and later Zhili provincial government. During the second Civil Revolutionary War, it was one of the red Soviet counties, subordinate to Fujian and Jiangxi Province. After the long march of the Red Army and the fall of the Soviet Area, it was the ninth, seventh, third and second administrative supervision area. After the liberation of Taining in February 1950, it was under the jurisdiction of the second Fujian Provincial Office of the Commissioner of administrative supervision (later renamed Nanping Office of the Commissioner). In June 1970, it was assigned to Sanming District. In April 1983, it belonged to Sanming City.

The climate of Taining belongs to the mid subtropical monsoon mountain climate. Influenced by marine climate, southeast wind prevails in summer, and cold air from northwest invades in winter. There is no extreme heat in summer. There is no severe cold in winter. The four seasons are mild and humid with sufficient light. The rainfall is abundant and the annual average temperature is 17 ℃. Frost free period is about 300 days. The average annual rainfall days are 130-175 days, the average annual rainfall is 1775 mm, and the total annual rainfall is 2.706 billion cubic meters. The three main tributaries of Jinxi, Suixi, Shanxi and Puxi, converge in Taining. In addition to the water in the whole area of Taining, the water from all Jianning, the west half of Mingxi, and some areas of Shaowu, Ninghua and Jiangle also flows into Taining. Jinxi has a total rainfall collection area of 4758.4 square kilometers above Qingzhou in the southeast of Taining, and a water holding basin area of 3219.02 square kilometers, which is 2.09 times of the total area of 1539.38 square kilometers in Taining. The total annual flow of rivers in and into the county is about 4.6 billion cubic meters.

The surface geological structure of Taining is composed of magmatic rocks, metamorphic rocks and continental sedimentary rocks. Magmatic rocks are mostly distributed in the northwest and southwest of the county, metamorphic rocks are distributed in the northeast and southeast of the county, and sedimentary rocks are mostly distributed in belts. The soil forming parent materials of the latter include residual, slope and alluvium.
