Shizuishan City, a prefecture level city under the jurisdiction of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is located in the northernmost part of Ningxia. It is adjacent to Ordos platform in the East and the north of Yinchuan Plain in the West. It has a typical temperate continental climate. It has jurisdiction over two districts and one county, with a total area of 5310 square kilometers. In 2017, it has a permanent resident population of 803000.
Shizuishan city is named for its beautiful scenery because of the "protruding rocks like the mouth" on both sides of the Yellow River. Shizuishan is an important node city of Hula Baotou Yinlan economic belt, Ningxia Economic Zone along the Yellow River, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi and Urumqi Golden Triangle Economic Zone. The Yellow River passes through the East and the Helan Mountain in the west, with a wetland area of 415 square kilometers. Integrating the first batch of 5A tourist attractions Shahu in China. Shizuishan City, known as "Saishang coal city", is famous for producing anthracite.
In 2017, Shizuishan achieved a GDP of 53.498 billion yuan, an increase of 7.2%. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 2.770 billion yuan, an increase of 4.6%; the added value of the secondary industry was 32.227 billion yuan, an increase of 6.3%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 18.401 billion yuan, an increase of 9.2%.
In December 2019, the State Commission for democracy and people's livelihood named Shizuishan as "national demonstration city of national unity and progress".
Historical evolution
Shizuishan, commonly known as Shizuizi, is named after Helan Mountain, where rocks protrude like mouths.
In 1956, the state decided to develop the abundant coal resources in Shizuishan on a large scale.
In 1958, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established and reported to the State Council to withdraw the county (Huinong county) to build a city.
On April 20, 1959, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region reported to the State Council the request for instructions on Abolishing Huinong county and establishing Shizuishan city.
On January 7, 1960, the 93rd plenary session of the State Council formally decided to "establish Shizuishan City, abolish Huinong County, and put Shizuishan and other 10 townships (towns) of Huinong County under the administrative region of Shizuishan City, and the rest under Pingluo County".
On March 26, 1960, the first people's Congress of Shizuishan city was held. At the meeting, Shizuishan city was officially established and stationed in Shizuishan. At that time, Shizuishan city governed Shizuishan town (district level) and weizha, huangquqiao and Baofeng communes. In April 1960, Shizuishan town was rebuilt into two districts, and two urban people's communes, South Street and North Street, were established. The two communes are a set of people and two brands. In May, the scale of the commune was adjusted. The three communes in the suburbs were divided into eight communes (weizha commune was divided into weizha commune and xiayingzi commune; huangquqiao commune was divided into huangquqiao commune, yanzidun commune and xiyonggu commune; Baofeng commune was divided into Baofeng commune, Miaotai commune, Lihe commune). In May 1962, South Street and North Street were merged into the urban area under the jurisdiction of the city.
In May 1963, the state-owned horticultural farm became collectively owned, known as the horticultural commune. In July, huangquqiao and Baofeng communes were put under the jurisdiction of Pingluo County; Dawukou town and Dawukou commune in Pingluo County were put under the jurisdiction of Shizuishan city. So far, Shizuishan City has jurisdiction over 1 District of urban area, 1 town of Dawukou town and 8 communes including weizha, xiayingzi, yanzidun, xiyonggu, Miaotai, Lihe, horticulture and Dawukou. In 1968, Dawukou town moved to Dawukou and set up a street office in Shitanjing as the agency of Dawukou town. In October 1970, the Shitanjing district was set aside from Dawukou Town, the Shitanjing sub district office was cancelled, and the Shizuishan district was set up.
In 1972, Yinbei District of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region was established, and the regional organ was located in Dawukou town. Shizuishan city belonged to Yinbei district. In 1973, Dawukou town was upgraded to a district. Shizuishan governs the first district (in Dawukou), the second district (in Shizuishan) and the third district (in Carboniferous well). In 1975, Dawukou commune and horticultural commune were put under the jurisdiction of Dawukou District and Shizuishan district respectively, and a leading group of communes directly under the municipal government was set up to take charge of the other six communes. In 1976, the leading group of communes directly under Shizuishan city was abolished and the suburb of Shizuishan city was set up, with jurisdiction over weizha, xiayingzi, yanzidun, xiyonggu, Miaotai and Lihe communes. In 1979, Dawukou commune in Dawukou District and horticultural commune 2 in Shizuishan district were put under the jurisdiction of suburbs.
In 1981, the three districts were renamed as their residences, namely Dawukou, Shizuishan and Shitanjing, and the city residences were moved to Dawukou. Shizuishan city not only has jurisdiction over three districts and eight communes, but also has jurisdiction over Pingluo and Taole counties. In 1983, the communes in the suburbs were renamed townships.
In 1987, the suburb of Shizuishan city was abolished and Huinong county was restored. Dawukou Township and Yanhuan village of Huayuan Township, which were under the jurisdiction of the former suburbs, were respectively under the jurisdiction of Dawukou District and Shizuishan district; Huinong county had jurisdiction over seven townships.
In October 2002, the State Council approved to abolish Shitanjing District of Shizuishan City and put it under the jurisdiction of Dawukou District, and put Longhu Diaozhuang township of Pingluo County and Changsheng, Jiuquan and Chaohu villages of Chonggang Township under the jurisdiction of Dawukou District.
In February 2004, the State Council approved to abolish Huinong county and Shizuishan District of Shizuishan City, establish Huinong District of Shizuishan City, and take the former administrative region of Huinong county and Shizuishan district as the administrative region of Huinong district; abolish Taole County of Shizuishan city. Hongyazi Township, Gaoren Township and mataigou town of Taole county were put under the jurisdiction of Pingluo County, and yueyahu township was put under the jurisdiction of Xingqing District of Yinchuan city.

The surface water system of Shizuishan city consists of the main stream of the Yellow River, the primary tributaries of the Yellow River, dusitu River, Shuidonggou, Helanshan mountain valley, the diversion and drainage channel system of the Yellow River, the plain lowland catchment lakes and marshes, and most of the water is the transit water of the Yellow River. The main recharge sources of groundwater are the infiltration of water from the Yellow River and the storage of rainfall in the mountain area, which are concentrated in the alluvial fan and plain area in front of the mountain; a small amount of weathered fissure water is stored in the weathered shallow mountain area of Helan Mountain; there is little storage of groundwater in the Ordos platform.
